Air Conditioning Help

This is the first time I have posted here so I hope this is the right place.

I have a 1995 4Runner, 6cyl 4x4. The AC works great on cool days but on hot days it only blows hot air. Anyone know what would cause this?

Thanks

Does the compressor turn?

If it's out of coolant, it won't even engage to protect the system. You should be able to feel/hear it turn on when you turn the A/C on.

If it's low, it will work as you described.

There are kits to add coolant, complete with pressure gauges/leak sealant (sometimes works)/leak marker at WalMart for about $30. They're always worth a try before taking it in, because A/C is really just one on those things you can't work on too much, except for maybe chaning out a compressor or another major part.

If you have a major eak, you'll probably have to take it in.

Sounds like you are just low on r-134. If it blows cold on cool days but won't blow cold on hotter days then most likely it's low. Like T-1000 said, does the compressor engage when it's cool out or is it just cool outside air? If it is in fact operating when cooler then you are just low. Pick up a can of r-134 & a cheap charge hose & slowly charge it until it begins to blow cold. You would be much better off finding a friend with a set of gauges though who has charged A/C systems before.

Where are you located? Maybe someone can help you out?

Cold days it blows cold, hot days it blows hot. Sorry but thats just too funny!!

The compressor is on the bottom passenger side. Turn ac on high and look at the compressor. It has a clutch mechanism on the front. If the compressor is turning on you'll hear a little click and engine rps will drop slightly. Also the clutch on the front of the compressor where the belt is will turn.

The compressors usually stop working when low on freon. Just add some more with the ac on high and engine running and it should engage again.
