Aftermarket gears in factory 4.88 3rd

I grenaded a 4.88 rear yesterday and someone could rebuild it for me but I thought you can't put aftermarket gears in the 4.88 thirds

factory 4.88s are not very strong. its typical. I ran mine with lockers and they were fine with 33s.

Is that the issue because factory? I would assume the quality is there from Toyota but guess it failed. What's the reasoning aftermarket gears won't fit the 4.88 housing? I'm running only 33s

I believe it's the offset inside the 3rd that's different to any other toy diff. Gearinstalls.com should have some info about it.

First I've heard of this. I plan on putting some power though mine. I'll see if it holds...

the factory 4.88 is a thinner ring gear. the aftermarket 4.88 that you would put into a 4.10 or 4.30 diff is the same thickness, I believe.

I've seen them come up for sale in the classifieds time to time. Did a bearing let go or the actual ring and pinion break teeth off?
