run 2 1/4" pipe and go with a magnaflow muffler had it on my truck before my 3.4 swap and it was slightly louder but not overkill at all.

deff run 2 1/4 piping and then put a high flow cat because i took mine off the first time and it was really loud but not too crazy....in my opinion... but it smell bad and some states have inspections so i put a hi flow on there and i put the 18" cherry bomb on and it gets the point across and is what i wanted loud but not obnoxious
this is the second set up i had but i added a turn down because it comes right back in the truck how it is in the pic and add a hanger on the end.

simple? Go buy a muffler and weld it in with 2 1/4 piping.

complex? headers, 2 1/4 piping with a borla turbo style muffler. <---- dont do this and expect gains, its strictly a sound mod only.

This. I have this exact setup on my 3.0 and it sounds amazing compared to what it sounded like before. I could barely hear my exhaust before. Now, it sounds like a growling beast at 3000 RPMs and has a nice low rumble at idle. People look when I rev my engine. I can't say I felt the same way about my 4runner before it. I was scared it was going to sound like a ricer, but I was pleasantly surprised. It sounds like an american v8.

Heres the deal my90yota4x4,

1. Follow the rules you agreed to.*( see section on language)*
2. When you type like uneducated idiot, people will call you out on that.

Replace the cat with straight pipe, chop the exhaust under the bed before it turns up to meet the muffler if you just want loud. It won't sound good, but it will be loud. My truck is this way currently (The no muffler part not by choice, old one broke apart and I got tired of hearing it rattle so what was left met my sawzall). It's OBSCENELY loud now, I mean I have had daily drivers that were open header or close to it, and this thing is enough to bother me, gonna put a turn down on it to try and limit it using the bed as a megaphone for the time being since I don't have the budget for an exhaust.

"Losing back pressure" Is the whole point of an aftermarket exhaust system by the way. What you're probably referring to is when someone puts too large an exhaust system on, the pulses won't flow smoothly and fight eachother, reducing flow and scavenging and therefore reducing performance.
