AFT leaking all over the place
91 Auto 4x4 160k
A fountain of AFT in a gas station was not what I wanted to see on my first road tip. After traveling about 50 miles on the highway at about 65 mph the A/T Fluid Temp light came on. I checked the fluid, it was low so I added about 3 quarts. That ended up being about a quart more than I should have added. On the road again the light came on again and I noticed smoke coming out the back. I pulled over and saw AFT leaking from several points. It looked like it was leaking out the oil pan seam. I just dropped the pan about a month ago and replaced the gasket and tightened all the bolts to spec.
I've been told that if ATF get too hot it loses it ability to cool so I think I should drain and and refill with new AFT. I've been using Dex-Merc I've read about other fluid to use, I'll have to look into that more. I guess I should also add an external transmission cooler.
I've also been told that the temperature sensor some can go bad. I don't think this is a problem as the fluid is obviously getting too hot.
Any other ideas?
