Adjustable Pressure Plate?

Okay so I pulled my clutch set while doing my frame resto and noticed on the pressure plate there are 3 Phillips Head Screws that appear to adjust the pressure plate depth. The clutch is the original and had maybe .5mm left above the rivets so it was time to go.

Has anybody else seen these screws? (I'll post pics when I get a chance later) Has anyone ever messed with these screws? My new Aisin pressure plate from WabFab doesn't have these so I thinking it's got to be part of the Toy spec, no?

For a brief period of time between 1985 and 1989 Toyota used those style of pressure plates on most 22REs. There were apparently two types, one from 85-88, and another from 88-89. The screws aren't for any type of adjustment. They apparently hold a small spring to the plate. I can't quite figure out exactly how they work, but the plate on those was replaceable. So in addition to those screws, you'd need to remove a few bolts and take the cover assembly off, to replace the plate, or the cover if need be.

I'd never heard of these before. I was only familiar with the older type that had three rivets you had to drill out to bolt on the new plate, or cover assembly with "special bolts"(as per the 1985 FSM). Which were only used untill 1985, AFAIK. The 1990 and later type aren't serviceable in any manner at all, you can only replace the entire cover assembly(plate included).

The 85-88.

The 88-89.

How you ended up with one of those on your 94 is beyond me. That shouldn't be the case. Just in case you were wondering, Toyota still sells the plates. The part # is 31221-29055. But it's supposed to be for the 85-88 only. I can't find a part # for the 88-89 plates, which is odd.

PS, Aisin is the OEM manufacturer for all Toyota clutches, and many other components too. Always has been.

That's interesting. I always thought my truck was running on the original clutch. The dealer (my dad) told me it had the clutch replaced when the motor was replaced???? Idk how you blow up a 22re in less the 70k miles, thats what was on the clock when I bought it.

Funny photobucket pulled the pic due to obscene nominclature i.e. "screw" in the title. So here it is retitled for future generations.
