AC Shakedown
Would would be the best plan of action to go about checking the AC setup on my truck? I have the FSM but just wanted to know what others have done. I boguht the truck the AC didnt blow cold. AC compressor would kick on, but now it doesnt but i believe it is because of no freon. I want to do as much as i can to go thorugh it before taking it to the shop. Also what exactly needs to be done to convert it to the new freon type? Since the truck purged itself of freon i unfortuantely do not have to worry bout disposing of the old stuff. I am looknig to jsut save some money and do what i can before the shop charges me.

I believe you still might have to have the system evacuated, You need to make sure all of the r-12 is out of there, then you go to your local parts shop...napa, autozone...etc, and get the r-12 to r-134a conversion kit, its a pretty straight forward thing, and the kit should have all the instruction you need. When I converted mine, i think it cost $50 to evacuate the system, and another $40 for the kit and refrigerant.

Is there a usual spot for hoses to leak? I will check for hoses cracking but is there place to look for? I will see what the stores have and get the kit.

The o-rings between the hoses and connections tend to fail.
If it was mine, I'd go to an AC shop and have it tested for leaks. They can apply a vacuum to it and see if it leaks. The backyard method is to convert to R-134a and apply a dye in the oil. You buy special light / glasses that allows you to see where the leaks are.
