If I turn the fan selector on low it works. As soon as I try to push it up to the next setting it stops. I was pulling my rear antilock computer out yesterday so I decided to check things out down there while I had the glove box off. I had the truck running to see if I could narrow down the problem and found that once I turn the fan on low the relay clicks then once I push it to the next speed the relay clicks again and the fan stops and one setting at a time I go through the string to high fan and it does nothing until I set it back to low fan and the relay clicks and the fan comes back on.

It's spring here and getting ready to hit the heat of summer soon so I'd like to get some AC going lol. It was 80 yesterday but the fan only being able to be set at low does next to nothing with the sun beating through the windsheild!

Any one else have this problem or know how to fix it? I don't think it's the relay because i think the fan wouldn't work at all if the relay was bad right?

Probably the resistor switch, I think. Mine does the same thing, except it only runs on high. When you figure it out, make sure you post your findings.

Mine only runs on high, even after swapping out the switch and this drives me nuts. I'm very curious about this as well....

The switch is actually the selector, it's exactly behind the fan speed knob. If you have the same layout as mine, it's directly above the stereo slot.

It may be different than mine, but my switch was held in place by some plastic tabs. When I took the switch out for diagnosis, some of the tabs broke, so now the stupid thing is loose.

I need to go into the dash at some point, so when I do, I'm going to replace the switch and fix the switch mounting, among other things.

Bridger, did you replace it with a new or used switch? I actually replaced mine as well, but it was a junkyard switch. It bench tested like it could have been good, but when it didn't fix the problem, I assumed it was another bad switch.

H ok. I thought the resistor switch meant some other component lol thanks man. I'm gonna go mess with it right now and see if there's anything that can be done there.

What's weird is the 87 toyota that I owned before this one had the exact same problem. That and the window regulators were worn out and stripped in both trucks. Basically I bought the exact same truck, a little newer, different color, and lifted. In the end, my current truck has had way more problems, but has also had a hard life with the previous owner(s).

I replaced it with a wrecking yard switch from a low mile '94.... You could be right...

UPDATE: it was the switch. I took it out and took it apart and one of the prongs was melted into the plastic. It took some time scraping the melted plastic and getting all the prongs lined back up the way they were supposed to be but now it works fine. I don't know how much a new switch would cost but I hate to buy parts if there's ANY way I can fix the old one lol.

No problem. You may have pointed me in the right direction! I never tried taking mine apart. I'm going outside right now to take a look at it.

I'm glad to hear it is working fine. I hope it doesn't overheat again and do a repeat.

I was pricing the switches online, and they ranged from around $37 to $45. I'll take a fix at home over that anyday!

Just be careful cuz there is a little sping and cooper piece in there that you don't want to lose when you take the switch apart. And if it melts again I'll probably have to buy one cuz there wasn't much plastic left after scraping it away =)

Anyone else having this problem? It really drives me nuts and I don't wanna tear my dash apart to check the switch unless I know 4 sure that's the prob.

If yours is doing the same thing Bridger, I'd put money on the switch.

I tore my switch out earlier. It was kind of easy since I don't have a stereo installed right now. I got it torn apart, but everything looks good inside. Nothing was melted, all of the contact points looked clean. I can tell that the contacts are still touching, because the wear pattern is fresh. Now I hope I can put it back together. I'm not sure the switch in my truck was meant to be taken apart.

I think I might have some wire problems or something else going on. I am going to spend some time with a multi-meter and jumpers this weekend.

Bridger, it does suck having to go into the dash, but you would have to go in there to diagnose anyway. If it's not the switch, time to start checking wires.

I'll update if I find anything.

Does your switch have the little bulb and wires attached to it for the illumination of the AC panel?

Yep, that's the one. The housing was so brittle that the tabs just broke right off.
