He maybe referring to a R-12 or R-134a compressors. I think in 92-93 Toyota started changing them over to the more efficient R134a compressors. There should be a sticker on the hood stating if its R-12 or R134a.

Only other way to tell is looking at the fittings on the charge lines. R-12 has thread on fittings (looks like valves on your wheels) and R134a is a quick release like a air hose sort of.

Good Luck!

Both will be back by the fire wall were they go into the condenser right beside the Charcoal canister on the pass side.

AC Diagnostics - 93 toyota pickup 3.0

problem - AC compressor will not engage when the i hit the switch. I recently swapped out my 3.0 for a rebuilt and not just trying to get the AC dialed in, will the low pressure switch protect the compressor if there is nothing in the system? id like to ensure the system will run prior to adding the refrigerany (134a). How about the VSV? will this keep the compressor from kicking on or if the VSV is bad will it just keep the engine from kicking up slightly in idle? last question, will the thermistor prevent the compressor from kicking on some how? thanks for all the help . . .

If there is nothing in the system the compressor will not turn on or engage. That's a fail safe if you lose the refrigerant and its oil that you will not burn up the expensive parts. As far as I know anyways, I always charge the system first and try from there.

correct. there is a fail switch that is located behind the glove box. i still need to take mine apart to bypass it so my AC button turns on my OBA.

compressor is good, charged the system and everything kicked on like it should-- shut if off and turned it back on, my dad noticed a sputtering down at the compress, got underneth and found a large hole on the aluminum part of the low pressure line -- will the 4runner system match the 93, 4x4 3.0 V6? i checked my little bros 22re 93 and no dice-- the line ties into the cooling unit differently --any help?

Not sure what you are asking? The system from the P/U will match the 4runner as long as its the same coolant type i.e. R12 system or R134a system.
