95 3.0 Stumbling/hesitation

I know this has been beat to death, but I need some input...

Got a 95 'Runner, 3.0, 5 spd. Runs like a champ, but sometimes (well, most of the time), when taking off, there is a definite stumble/hesitation when under load. 2nd and 3rd are the worst. Its like it doesn't matter how hard you push it, the power doesn't come on until 2800-3000, then WHAM, it hits. It kinda stumbles on itself and then finally picks up. Sometimes, I'll hit it just right (or wrong, as it were), and it will just stumble violently then finally take off.

I just feel like it doesn't have as much low-end power as it should, it all comes on at around 3,000.

Any ideas? It idles pretty good, just a tiny bit of a shake, but its almost non-existent. And it runs good, aside from the stumbling. It doesn't really bother me too much, but if its a simple fix, I might as well make it right.

Thanks!

Oh, by the way, this isn't the original motor. That one locked up at 200,000 (this one also has 200k). When it was first dropped in, it would nearly stall when shifting. It got better and better for a while to a point, but hasn't gone away.

Cool

I have been having the same problem and just keep running into more problems. This is the list I have made so far from reading many post about this.

Check:
1. Coolant Temp Sesor - Dont know why I just read about it.

2. Check o2 sensor - If needed to be replaced dont buy the Bosch it stinks get the Denso

3. Check injectors - **If you can get your hands on a Haynes manuel it will tell you how to check them with an ohm meter.**

4. Check Main Control Relay above ECU (Same as injectors)

5. Check EFI relay (Same as injectors)

6. Check Knock Sensor

7. Check fuel filter / Fuel pump

I also read about putting the computer in open loop to check sensors. Concept as follows. Use a jumper wire on ECU as if you were going to check your timing. This puts your computer into open loop and bypasses all sensors. Drive your vehicle. If the problem goes away its a sensor, if it remains its mechanical.

I have not yet been able to get around to these things for myself so I cannot vouch. But I have spent many hours reading old post and these are the things I have found.

Hope it helps

Thanks alot! I was thinking about some of the above as being a problem. I had an 87 w/the 22RE and EVERY sensor was bad on it. Caused all sorts of funky problems. I have a manual, so I'll start checking stuff...if I can find the time

Thanks for the input, if anyone has anything else to add, feel free!

I have a 90 4runner with a 3.slow. It had a hesitation it the thing that was driving me crazy. It wasn't as drastic as yours is but as I would drive down the road it would randomly stumble for no apparent reason. It didn't matter what gear I was in or at what throttle position. After changing everything imaginable on the thing, I took apart the AFM and cleaned the circuit board with alcohol and then readjusted the little contact finger like contraption. I adjusted it so it would ride on a new path along the circuit. After putting it all back together I have not had a stumble or hesitation since. It has been about 4 months now.

Sometimes if your distributor points are worn down and corroded they will have a problem conducting at low RPM's. That would be an easy fix.
