New to the forums, and was wondering something. Recently I noticed that when started from cold (about 10F), you can hear something that sounds sickeningly like rod knock, but at a frequency that makes it sound like *all* the rods are knocking. It gets louder with RPM, and is almost impossible to hear at anything below 1500. I discovered this one morning when I was late and didn't have time to let it warm up as usual. I heard it as I was driving down my driveway, and I panicked, shut it off, and checked the oil, which was at the correct level. So I made what could have been a very stupid decision, and got back in and continued driving. Within a minute or two of driving, the sound was gone. I was running 10w-30 quaker state high mileage at the time, and I theorized that the oil was too thick when cold, so I changed that for 5w-30 of the same type. This didn't change it one way or the other. Am I looking at something major or expensive to repair? Thanks in advance.

I dunno, but you might try a different brand, I dont know many people who are fans of quaker state.

I just had the same problem with my 22 re when i was late and it was very cold. Hope its nothing but sounds bad until warm

had same problem with my wife's caravan, I was using 10w-30 and 87 octane gas. then went to 5w-30 castrol and 89 octane gas. that thing has 300k miles on and still kicking. (not bad,to be a chrysler)

What motor?
My 22re does that untill it runs for a minute or two.
Its just the hydraulic timing chain tensioner.

Any other motor, i dont know what to tell ya

Thanks for the reassurance. It has 275k miles on it, and I'm about to replace the timing chain/guides, hopefully that will see it past 300k at least.

Nice. I am at 360k kms, about 235000 miles, and i dont know if the timing chain and stuff has ever been changed. Its pretty loud sometimes.
So i plan on doing mine this summer.

My guesses would lean towards either the timing chain, but it's more of a metallic rattle than a knock; worn oil pump; or maybe the rod bearings are towards the worn side and the oil is too thin- thinner oil will pump around faster but will also squeeze out of loose clearance (read as "worn") areas faster than a thicker oil would until at least the multi-weight feature of the oil thickens when it warms up.
... just a thought.

Yeah, it has a seperate noise from the knocking, kind of a like a rattle, right around 2000 RPM, but not below or above that speed. I assume it's the timing chain, which is why I want to get that fixed soon.

With 275K on the engine, if the chain's never been serviced it's well over due. The typical chain service life is around 100K miles. That's not to say with regular oil changes and such it won't go longer but it seems you're on borrowed time here.

try a thiner 0/30 synthetic? Its just thinner at start up but still a 30 at opp temp.

I'm the second owner, and the guy I bought it from had the oil changed every 3000 miles (he even has documentation), which probably explains how it's gone this long on the original timing chain.
