Hi. I don't think the " Spare " has ever been down on my 94 Yota. The original owner told me he never had it down, so that means it's not been down. I tried to get it down today, but can not budge the " thingy " that drops the Spare down. It is obviously " rusted " up pretty good. I tried spraying it up with PB Blaster, but don't think i am getting on the rusted area. I think i need to spray on the spare tire side of the Bed rail, above the spare tire? Hard to see above the tire. I guess that's where the cable winds around something? I can't see up in there. I know i can get someone to cut off the plate on the bottom. I was hoping there was someway to free it up. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you. bad luck 247.

May need to lift the bed. There are 4 bolts you may need to cut off to let the whole assembly down and make it easier to work with. Being in Pennsylvania it may not be repairable. We dont have the corrosion you have and I have had to junk the spare lift out on a couple of trucks and replace it with a salvage yard one.

I put the acetylene torch up into the rim center and blew the chain in half after cribbing the tire up so it would'nt drop on me.

I guess i will end up cutting it down. This PA salt is rough on our vehicles for sure. I had this Truck since 2004. Maybe i should have tried to get the Spare down before now huh. Well this is what i get for letting it go so long. I will mount it in the Bed somehow. Then at least i will have a Spare Tire when i need one. Thanks guys!

Keep soaking the pulley in WD-40/PB-Blaster. If it comes to cutting the tire loose, the it does not hurt to try and release the pulley using every bit of force you can put on it. Put a big pipe on the end of the rod that lowers the spare if you have to. It just might break it loose so you do not have to cut it off or put it in the bed. Removing the bed is not difficult at all and can help you get at it. That would also give you a good opportunity to replace the fuel lines and clean up some rust at the same time.

For what it is worth I have never had one that I did not need to cut off

Then the way my luck goes it would be flat when needed .Who would crawl under the truck to check the pressure??

Maybe if one had the truck from new and lowered it every few months and lubed it real well.

Is it cable, or chain? Mine was totally jammed up, so I aired down the tire and used a bar to slowly turn the winch. Ended up removing the whole thing, disassembling, cleaning, packing it with grease, and reinstalling. Now I'll check it every so often, make sure it turns easily. I'm in the PNW, so corrosion isn't a huge problem. If you can, lose the cable one, get a chain winch. I've cut the cable ones in junkyards with some blocks and a hefty pair of cutters.

I had the same issue with my '86 I had to grind the "hook" the bracket on the end of the cable to get my spare off. Removed the assembly completely.

Like anything automotive in the north east the tire carrier needs preventive maintenancE. In the 6 years I lived in upstate NY I just lowered mine once a month and shot it with WD40 or PB blaster and never had an issue on my 84 truck or 97 Taco.

sounds like you may need to lift the bed (which is really easy just remove a couple of bots and have a few friends help you lift the bed off) spray it good or you could just use a big pry bar.

Thanks guys! I think i am going to pull the bed to get at the winch easier. I will try to PB Blaster it real good, and hope to get it working. Then i will grease it up, and check it every month or so, and re-lube it. Mine is the Cable type, no chain. If it will not break free, i will cut the cable. Good luck, if your tire winch is rusted your bed bolts are too, it was a bear to get mine off. and the lack of room to get a 19mm wrench in there was fun too.

Thanks for letting me know about the Bed bolts. I won't bother with it then. I will just cut the cable to drop the spare tire. I will buy some run flat tires soon as i can. No spare is as good as a spare that you can not access. The spare is not going in the Bed. I have had this Truck for 10 years, and never needed the spare tire.

May be worth trying, may not be. Mine was frozen when I bought it, wouldnt turn by hand. Hooked an impact up to the long rod/tool, on the 2nd try it came free. First try it broke one of the teeth of the rod. Found another one at pick a part for a few bucks to replace it, tried again, and wammo. Freedom.
