94 4wd 4cyl starter issue
Hello,
Deepwater Horizon has been running well up till last evening when the starter just ground without turning the motor over. I got a push start at the restaurant we were at, and when I got it home I turned it off then tried again. It still made a griding noise but started. I tried once more and it did the grind without turning the motor.
So several questions:
1. is the starter the same for a 2wd and 4wd or are they different?
2. Truck is standard shift, is the ring gear on the flywheel a common point of failure?
3. I got this starter 4 years ago (90K miles) from Napa as a replacement for the one the prior owner put on about 2 years before that. Needless to say, I'm not impressed with the quality. Any brands to avoid? Anyone have any decent luck with some of the on line rebuilders? I'm seeing starters as low as $76 on line but wonder about lack of quality.
Any other pitfalls to avoid on this repair?
I'm going to pull the old starter this weekend. Sure hope the ring gear is ok!
Thanks,
Kip
