94 3.0, low oil pressure and tapping noise...
Hello all,
I just joined but have been checking out the forum for quite some time. My daughter has wanted a 4runner for a very long time and after saving up she found one in her price range. I checked it out before she bought it and the guy was totally trying to scam her. The oil pressure was low, the lifters were singin' a song and the engine was smoking, among many other things. So I told the seller it's shot and he tried to act like he had no clue but....... As I was about to leave he said to make an offer and I low balled the hell out of it, just 'cause I didn't think he would bite and I figured it needed an engine. Well...he bit. We've had it for a little while and I've had a little time to mess with it. The smoking engine was from a bad power steering pump switch that was allowing the P/S fluid to be sucked into the engine, so that's good to go now. However, the low oil pressure/tapping doesn't occur until the engine is warmed up. I've heard these engines can go forever so I don't want to give in to a reman engine just yet. Does anyone know where the best oil pressure port to check pressure is at? Do the oil pumps go out on these engines often? Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The stock oil pressure gauge isn't exactly accurate. Can you give us an idea of where it starts out & how low/high it is as idle/3000 rpm when warm?
Ticking noise is usually the fuel pressure regulator. Tapping might be more sinister....
