93 3vze engine codes 14 & 71

Hey all,
I recently had a check engine code 14 & 71 pop up. One is EGR and the other has to do with ignition, which doesnt seem to make sense that they both pop up all of a sudden together (at least to me). Any suggestions or experince on this? The truck still seems to run fine; I disconnected battery for about 10 min and light went away for about two weeks but recently came on again.
Thanks

Any ideas

Anyone have any experience with both these codes at same time?

Unfortunately yes. Our 94 threw those exact code, and a month later the ignition coil took a dump.

Same thing, ran fine an then pfft, nothing. Expensive part.

Hopefully that's not your problem, but if you have an OHM meter and an FSM you might want to check the resistances on the coil. At the very least make sure everything in that area is plugged in nice and tight.

Thanks stock87

Hey,
thanks for the experienced feedback, that is exactly what I was looking for.....I will measure the resistance, I was thinking it was the coil, dont know how that affects the EGR though....I can replace the coil myself, no problem if that is what is wrong...I was thinking it could also be the pickup coil in the distributor, did you ever check that? Appreciate any additional feedback anybody has..will get back with what I found the problem to be.

This may be a good opertunity to upgrade the ignition, it may even be cheeper then a replacement part.

Stock87, did you replace the coil pickup in the distributer also?

Actually here's a random question. Has a compression test been done recently? Our 4Runner had the CEL and subsequent death of the coil after the dealer did a compression test - I still think one of the techs accidentally grounded something they weren't supposed to on the coil, but I cant prove anything. Either way, the vehicle died and a new coil made it go again.

Actually, Yes

Actually, yes, I just had the head gasket replaced and they did a compression test at the time to diagnose the problem. About a month ago, not sure it is related..but who knows. I will probably buy a coil at autozone, to see if that solves the problem, should know in about a week if the check engine light comes back on again.

problem is intermittent

The problem with the codes 14 and 71 are intermittent, if I reset the computer, the codes wont show up for another week.

No need to replace the coil already (it's a couple hundred bucks, maybe dealer only), just if it dies, that's the first place I'd look.

I have had an ignition code the whole time I have owned my truck. Could someone explain how to diagnose the ignition coil? It used to have the egr code too but I got rid of that with 2 new o2 sensors. I will be selling this truck in not too long so I really need to have that light off. If I turn it off it will pop back on imediately as soon as I start it up.

You could do what that bastard who sold my truck did and pull the light bulb .

I am taking a chance, I think it is the coil, an intermittent problem right now, checked connections everything seems ok. The igniter is quite a bit more, so I will start with the coil. At the same time, I developed an oil leak, seal between engine and trans, guess I will wait until I do the clutch to get that fixed, its always something.

replacing coil anyway, I dont want to get stranded.

Why don't you get a performance ignition won't that fix your problems and give you more performance for about the same money?
