92 pickup ATF gushing from around torque converter
Hi Everyone, I have a 1992 4wd Toyota Pickup SR5 3vze with A340F automatic transmission and 277,000 miles on original engine and transmission. I recently replaced the rear main seal on the truck. Everything was fine for about the first 3000 miles then I started to notice that the transmission started to shift rough when the outside temperature would drop below 50. After it warmed up everything was fine. Tried putting paper under the truck to see if there was anything with a red tint to it but never found anything. Started to notice that the truck would be lower on ATF if I drove a longer distance at highway speeds, was loosing about 1qt of ATF every 500 miles.
Today decided to take a longer trip through the mountains, going uphill I didn’t notice anything until I started to see a cloud of mist covering the vehicles behind me. When I pulled over there was ATF gushing from the bell housing around the torque converter / rear main seal, the fluid was definitely ATF, I estimate that over about a ten minute period running about 3000 RPM it lost about 3 quarts. Being paranoid I always keep a case of ATF and oil in the back of the truck just in case so I topped it off and kept going. Driving down the mountain at less then 2000 rpm and flat all the way home there was no further loss of ATF.
It appears I will need to drop the transmission again to investigate the torque converter, does anyone out there have any experience with this kind of a leak? I am pretty good at swapping parts but am having trouble visualizing such a huge leak from the torque converter that only occurs when the engine is under a load. I looked through the Toyota manual and am at a loss. Are there any other seals in this area that could be the problem? Thanks!

Not knowing how to drive a auto trans I don`t own any.
You were losing fluid but could not see where it was going unless it was going into the coolant via the radiator ??
Did this not concern you ???
Seems a slight front seal leak was leaking into the area around the torque converter going up the hill things might have flexed enough to allow it to come out.
The transmission if low on fluid the added heat could make the leak worse.
