92 4runner sr5 v6 3.0 2wd to 4wd conversion possible?

so i am new to yotatech, although i do often come to the forums and just surf through them and it usually helps me out.. BUT i have read a few..i guess same threads, but none of them really helped me.. I have a 92 4runner sr5 v6 3.0 L EFI automatic. it is currently 2wd.. i really am looking into making it 4wd, it is my dream rig except for the fact it is missing the 4wd! ive been looking though scrap yards and , hehe, under other peoples rigs scopeing out what all i would need.. aside from the front end my question is this..

If i were to have a 4wd tranny and t-case from the same year/model/ect. would it bolt up and fit right without any major modification such as cutting/welding..

Now i know most of you will just say sell your 2wd and buy a 4wd but thats not what i want to do, i love my truck to much to get rid of it and have put far to much money into it to let it go..

will it work?

i dont know for sure but that thought raises a lot of questions to me.
(for starters)
1. is a 2wd frame able to take the added weight/stress?
-is it the same frame?
2. is there room to mount your 4x4 front end?
- diff support cross member? transfer case, cv shafts where would it all go
3. what about the ecm?
- those things are allways a pain.

have you considered a body swap to a frame that has 4x4.
i know thats not the answer you are looking for but it may be a lot less of a headache to just buy the next 4x4 that comes along for a $1000 and build your dream truck

Welcome to Yotatech.

Possible. Yes. Easy. Doubt it.

I edited your title for clarity so it helps folks find it and helps future searchers.

Please read this posted sticky for future reference:

Thanks.

the only thing that makes me really beleive it would not be that hard is that it looks like it used to be 4wd, it looks like the mounts and what not are still there for 4wd and all they did was tear it out and throw in a 2wd tranny and t-case..

on the title it says 4runner...ive never heard of a 4runner being 2wd, wouldnt it say pre runner? or do the generalize all of them as 4runners?

***EDIT***

I only say not that hard for me because ive dont multiple tranny swaps in my old 79 chev and most of them i had to do by myself on my back in the rain in a grass field and a fricken tranny jack on a sheet of plywood!
