91 4runner weird timming

91 4runner weird timming
My 91 v6 4runner was running like crap so i checked the timming with my light it was way advaced like off the chart so i pulled the distributor and put a small screw driver in cylinder number 1 and found the compression stroke as per the manual. I set the crank pulley at 0 and i couldnt get the rotor to line up like it should on the distributor and it wouldnt start so i found the highest point of piston number 1 which was around 10 degrees on the notch of the crank pulley sure enough the rotor lined up like it was supposed to and she started effortlessly why would that be the manual says to set the crank pulley at 0 degrees but yet it wouldnt run when i set it like that. Im very confused why it only ran like that???
