'91 3VZE tranny swap
Hi, this is my first post here and I am looking forward to learning a lot more about my trucks from all the info on this site.
I recently bought a '91 pickup for a steal and after bringing it home found out that there was a reason, cooked tranny. It has an automatic transmission behind a 3VZE (from reading here I believe it is an A340H). I also have an '87 with an auto behind a 22re (I think it is an A340F?). I am wondering if the transmission from the older truck is much different and will possibly be a simple swap.
I currently drive a '93 that is destined for the scrapyard. It is identical to the '91 except it is a 5spd. I would prefer to use this transmission in the '91 but swapping the auto with a std. sounds like a big job.
Info either way would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about automatic transmissions. The one in the '91 will only pull the truck along in 4-low. If the transfer case is in high range the motor revs and the truck sits. The fluid level is good and a nice red color, it doesn't have a burnt smell to it and the transmission doesn't leak at all. A friend told me it may have sat to long and all the seals dried up inside allowing it to bypass, but again I don't know much about these things.

The issue with using the 5spd is that the '93 is my daily driver and if I pull the tranny I have no wheels. Also, I sometimes like to think I am more of a mechanic then I actually am and an auto to std. swap might be a pretty big job for me. That is why I was hoping the auto in the '87 22re would work in my '91 3VZE. If it won't the 5spd will be going in for sure, I will just have to find another vehicle to drive while I am doing it.

The truck is out at my father-in-laws, I'll have to look the next time I'm out there.
Thanks for your help. I was looking through your build thread, looks awesome.

from everything i have heard they cant be switched the 22re and 3vze trans, i also did the 5spd swap and love it, took 2 days to do, just make sure u have everything together before u start it, the worse part for me was getting the brake pedal out and the brake and clutch pedals in, most the other stuff was easy,

Thanks, I am going to look up a bunch of info on the swap. My father-in law did a auto to standard swap in a Ford Ranger years ago so I'm hoping to get him to help me with a lot of it. The only issue with the 5spd swap is having a vehicle to drive while I do the swap. Might have to see if I can get the old '87 running again.

Well my truck finally died on me yesterday, so I guess I will be attempted a 5spd swap this weekend on my 91. You guys on here have any pointers on this? Is there any difficult wiring involved? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have never attempted a project this big on my own before. Hoping to get started pulling the auto out tomorrow if I can.

Transmission model numbers should be on the I.D. tag inside the drivers door... might help you with your research to know what models you're working with.
I'd still try to look into whether or not those solenoids could be causing your symptoms... certainly be an easier repair than a full tranny swap.
Either way, good luck. I'm sure you'll find the info ya need on YT.

I swapped an a340 to an r150. Pretty sure my build thread has some notes. Its pretty easy. You'll need to tape just a few wires from the Trans harness but you can ditch the Trans ecu.
Good luck

Well I ended up swapping in another A340H. A friend found a four runner at a scrap yard that was in perfect running order but the body was toast. He just happened to be there when the lady that owned it drove it over the scale and left it there. Scrapper said he was lucky, the toyotas don't stay there very long. He wanted it for the axles and gave me the tranny for free. I was in need of my truck and didn't have time for the 5 spd swap so in went the auto. So far the truck is running great, I've been babying it so far put plan to take it for a good run this weekend.
