91 22re stalling around 1500 rpm
i have a 1991 toyota pickup extra cab with a 4 cyl. 22re engine, i recently dropped in a new long block and swapped a lot of engine parts, checked vacccum hoses to the best of my ability with a few diagrams, and my check engine light is not on after connecting all of the sensors and such, but i just noticed tonight driving home at a stop sign when sitting in neutral or with my foot on the clutch if i bring it up from an idol to about 1500 anywhere between 1100-2000 rpm it stalls out back down to about 900 rpm then back up then back down like it's dying out/stalling out, if i push the gas a bit harder it seems to do nothing until i yet again push it in even harder and it picks up to about 2100/2000 rpms, its very strange like it seems the low end power is very weak as well, i do hear a ticking noise and i adjusted the valves recently as well and the tick has not gone away, i'm not to sure if anyone has any advice please let me know thank you

if possible could one of you provide me a link that would show the proper idle adjusment process, i've attempted to do it following my chiltons book but i may have done something wrong or not too sure, i did adjust the sensor the screw on the top facing vertical to adjust the idle as well as moving the position of the throttle cable itself with the adjusting nuts on each side of the clamp to position the cable. any idea's on the knocking/ticking sound i'm exhausted on what it could be, i've been trying to find out for a few months now as i said i adjusted the valves and i actually adjusted them about one to two thousands of an inch tighter than it said in the book incase of wear/break in on the new engine. maybe thats just how the yota sounds normally not too sure but i can hear a tick that speeds up and slows with the engine rpm that doesn't sound quite normal

From what you wrote if you push on the gas pedal while sitting at a stop light the truck will rev up to about 1500rpm and then drop back down to 900rpm, correct? First I want to know why you are pushing the gas pedal at a stop light with the clutch in or the transmission in nuetral but we'll leave that for later.
If the rpm are climbing by without you pushing the gas pedal and then dropping back to 900 over and over then what you need to do is adjust your idle back down to 900. The engine is idling too high.

If you are holding the brake then the surging in idle caused by you pushing the gas pedal is coming from the ECU. When you are on the brake the ECU believes that you are at a stop and it wants the engine to idle (900rpm). So when you give it some gas while on the brake the ECU is going to cut the fuel and try to get back to idle. If you continue to hold the brake and give it gas the idle will bounce from about 1500rpm (this is where the ECU cuts the fuel) back down to idle (900rpm).
I hope that makes some sense.

i see, yes it makes sense to me, so if i do discover tonight when i drive home that it only seems to be happening when my foot is on the brake and not when my foot is off of the brake then this is normal and i shouldn't worry, as i wouldn't be accellerating and braking at the same time anyways just stumbelled across this last night and seemed strange but i will check it out tonight and post an update

you are right, it seems it only does this when my foot is on the brake and when i let up on the brake in the midst of it happening it stops so yes i'd assume that it is normal. thanks so much for the info haha i thought i had stumbled onto something strange. but as far as the engine tick goes i'm going to try and adjust my valves again i guess the sound is definitely coming from the valve cover area and seems a lot louder than it seems it should be. not too sure maybe the yota just ticks really loud
