I had engine problems with 90 4 cylinder and bought a 92 with 126000 on it with a good motor
I would also like to exchange the transmission as mine slipped out of gear in first.We have just taken it apart and because in 92 they had electronic hubs, the transfer case is different and the transmission won't mount to my transfer case.The main problem is with the speedometer which changed also and if I use the new transfer case the cable from mine can't be attached .We have both transmissions out and at the moment are puzzled as to how to adapt the new with the old.By the way my 90 was undercoated all it's life and the 92 was not but all else was good.Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated

By the way, electronic hubs were never an option, you had either manual hubs or ADD (just plates that bolt the CV in the locked position).

Are they both 4cyl?

If so. The 92 did not have Electric hubs, it was ADD as Jay stated. That would mean the 4cyl case is a Chain driven unit, and the trans is a G series. Assuming your 90 had manual hubs, your Tcase will be gear driven, the trans is a W series.

You can swap the two as complete assemblies with the T-cases attached

the 92 transmission and transfer case are for electronic hubs and my 90 is manual which i will retain the main problem is the 92 transfer case has an elctronic speedometer and my 90 has a cable i don't know how to adapt the system to allow me to enable my speedometer

Are you talking ADD?

As for the speedo sensor, you may be able to swap the two, if the sensor housing are the same diameter. If not, you will need to find one from a 90-91 4cyl W/ADD (chain case) that will have the mechanical driven speedo.

i mean 92 had ADD hubs and speedometer seems to be only problem to swapping motor transmission and transfer case

Ah, i see now. Well, since you are swapping from an ADD truck to a non-ADD truck, you may run into speedo sensor diameter issues. Check with local wrecking yards for sensors that are the correct diameter, then just make sure the teeth count is the same on the gear.

Edit: Btw, all 90-95 4Runners were ADD, so your best bet is to find a 90-91 4Runner 4cyl, and it will have exactly what you need

thanks for all the help mine is a 90 4-runner with manual hubs
so it was probably rare and i will try and match another 90 or 91 to get the correct sensor for my speedometer
how hard would it be to make mine ADD with this transfer case
