And $40 is less than $90, right?

Besides, the ones at the auto parts stores are not "new" they are rebuilt, which means the brushes were replaced and the cases were cleaned and painted.

id rather go to my local Toyota dealership and pay for new brushes than send my money to some guy that someone posted a phone number to in an open forum in hopes that sometime in the next couple weeks an alternator will show up at my door step probably left out in the open where anyone can take it. not saying that i don't buy things online but all the alts iv rebuilt in the past were not hard to do. my local auto parts didn't show an alt rebuild kit for my truck. how many people have rebuilt a Toyota alt themselves?

I suppose it comes down to what you think your time is worth...
how much the parts cost for you to do it (maybe mulitple times)...
you do the work and it doesn't work so you have to pull the part back out... (maybe multiple times)
....

If I knew I was only going to have to do it once, as if I was selling it soon, I'd probably go used.
If I was on a tight budget at the moment I'd go used (not rebuilt) as well, then replace it as soon as I could.
If I was planning on keepin the vehicle for years and years... any part with a lifetime warranty catches my eye for the sole reason that if I have to work on it, I will have to pull it, and if I can replace it for free... after pulling it... no brainer.

I don't see the correlation/justification for a 10 dollar part and saving money once I factor in my time pulling the part several times because the 10 dollar part didn't fix it.

well i could go buy one from the auto parts store but iv set myself on a tight budget going to try to buy an house in the spring, where ever i can save a buck helps, because about any house i go to buy im going to need at least a 10,000 down payment and then money on top of that so i have some sort of cushion. that being said most alts that i have rebuilt haven't taken more than 20 mins after i removed them from the vehicle. so if 20 mins is worth $30-$80 to you then good for you. if it was going to take me 3-6 hours to do i would consider buying an rebuilt. Anyone have any experience rebuilding an Toyota alt and can chime in on this part of it? also the 10 dollar part is the same thing that is replaced when you buy an rebuilt, so it wont fail any sooner than buying a rebiult

well, the 10 dollar part doesn't include the regulator, so if you replace the 10 dollar part and it turns out being the regulator...

Speaking of alternators.

Who makes a high output alt for these things? I want to run dual batteries among a myriad of other things and would like to pick up a 120-130 amp alt if someone makes one..

I've got the alt out in 20 minutes in the dark laying on a wet driveway, so it certainly isn't a hard job. Taking apart the alternator replacing the brushes took maybe an hour including the time spend looking for the little spring that fell on the floor which pushes the brush against the ... commuter (?). As a parsimonious student and someone who genuinely enjoys tinkering, I'd be perfectly happy splitting the alternator and looking at the condition of the brushes then deciding the course of action from their. If the brushes are very worn, then likely that, and only that is the problem.

I am not just "some guy" posting a phone number. Where did you get this negative outlook of parts being shipped to you? Couple of WEEKS? What reputable wrecking yard takes weeks to ship? And things are boxed up, and sent UPS. And it can be sent signature confirmation, which means they won't drop the part off unless YOU sign for it.
