My truck is an 89 4runner with an automatic transmission. It has been giving me problems by slipping and what not. Any tips or tricks or typical difficult issues on how to remove and replace it. Also my timing chain rattles a bit so I would like to replace that at the same time. Any tips on that too?

EASY. dont worry about it. buy a haynes manual and follow it, cant go wrong.

U can if you buy the haynes. Its the most vague p.o.s. I ever bought. Save your money and use the search button. Save you time and money.

The Haynes manual has vehicle specific information, you need a little common knowledge and common sence. Any mechanically inclined person should be able to figure out a transmission swap on one of these relativly simple trucks. I wasnt a mechanic when I managed it with just the manual. Also, Dont forget to use drift pins when pulling and attaching the bell-housing, makes things a hell of a lot easier!!

Not trying to stir things up dude but IMO anything other than manufacturer manuals are difficult to use if you are new to projects of this size. Especially considering that a Haynes manual does not have a section on swapping out a auto for a manual trans. It does however have the info you need for a timing chain guide replacement.

Now with that said if you combine a Haynes with this website you have a solid source of information.

haynes manual works great as a coaster or something to stabilize a rickity table..... otherwise www.ncttora.com/fsm is your friend.
