89 auotomatic
New guy here, I've gotten a ton of good info here, decided to join and hopefully make some kind of contribution.
What I have is my 89 ex-cab 4x4 got really hot (leaking water pump), and cracked something, I have water in the oil, and it runs like po-po. It has a 5 speed, only 230K on it. What I did was buy my buddies truck, a 89 ex-cab 4x4, but his has only 20k on the motor, and an automatic. The issue I'm having is when driving around town it drives good, but getting up to highway speeds is just embarrassing, very slow. Helps some to turn off the o/d until it gets up to about 50, but it just falls on it's face accelerating up to 65. My first automatic, not sure if it's just the truck or an issue that needs addressed. Both trucks are 22re.
BTW, my old truck with 230k on it didn't burn a drop of oil, started in sub-zero weather, and ice cold a/c.

The autos are slugs, so don't expect to win many races with it.
Does it do better manually shifting it? The autos in our Yotas are electronically controlled and sometimes the electronic shift solenoids stick causing the tranny to run in the wrong gear or in overdrive when it's not supposed to.

Seems to be in OD as soon as you get up to about 20-30 mph, passing gear doesn't work either. Does better shifting manually. From a dead stop it starts in low, but shifts directly into OD, seems like. I bought it from a friend of mine, he put the new engine in it, he said it did that from day one.

Why does everyone think a 100hp motor should be a rocket ship, yes the auto slows you down, but really is a 22r/re fast, no I think not. I love my 22r/A340F, I put the dual cases in low, low and wheel.

Should have said in the beginning I guess (sorry!) this is my daily driver, 50 mile round trip to work every day. Can't really have much down time, so need to fix the auto if possible.

I am having the same problem with my 91 4runner v6 auto. It wants to shift from 1st to 3rd. if I take off aggressivley sometimes it will shift 1-2-3. 90% of the time it misses 2nd. Does this sound like shift solenoid? If so, can I test solenoid?

Read somewhere if it shofts manually its prolly an electrical issue. Been too busy to mess with it but did replace the starter and alternator in the dark with a flashlight after work. It was cold too.
