Just got my first Toyota, 1989 4Runner Special Edition 22RE 5 speed.

Searches for "Big Oil Leak" and "Ticking" came up with lots of options, so I thought it couldn't hurt to post a video.

It has 188,000 kms (116,000 miles) no rust and is all stock.

Anybody had the same noise?

It will only start with the clutch cancel button, I'll have to look at the master cylinder pushrod and safety switch. (found that right here)

Just where is your big oil leak coming from??

If it is really bad Front seal or a hole in the timing cover .

Leaking valve cover gaskets

Leaking oil pressure sending unit

rear main seal

Hard to hear but these jump out at me,
Timing chain noise
valve clearance
exhaust leak

grab a volt meter and make sure the clutch switch is working when you push down on the clutch. Just fyi, don't know if you're aware or not as I can't see in the video but you need to push down on the clutch to start the rig.

Sounds like the timing chain might be rattling. Take off the valve cover and check to see if the timing chain guides have broken. You should be able to see them with a light when you look down into the engine under the cam sprocket. While in there check your valve adjustment

sounds like chain slap, or no oil in the motor and its clattering everywhere.

x2 on that one. If it has been run a long time on low oil, the noise might be parts that have had poor lubrication due to low pressure/amounts.

i watched the video again. did it run out of oil? it almost sounds like all of the rods are knocking. thats more of a knock than a tick. can you tell if its coming from the top or bottom of the motor?

Yeah, the clutch switch must be malfunctioning. I keep forgetting to use the cancel button.

I've spent about 7 hours cleaning the rig so far, the wife has named her "Mary Jane" lol.

Once I clean up the engine I'll be able to track down that leak, fresh oil slowly flows down that bottom pulley.

The noise seems like it comes from up top, I'm hoping its just the timing chain.

I've looked up prices on 1sttoyotaparts and toyotapartsbarn, OEM parts sure are more expensive eh? I hear it's worth it though.

There is an 88 4Runner at the wrecking yard I'm going to look at, I have a small list of missing or broken stuff to find.

Are there any parts I should grab that would be good backups or upgrades if it's an SR5?

I need a back window, it has been broken all winter. Maybe I'll grab the whole tailgate so I have a backup motor. Hopefully the electronics are intact so I can just hook up a battery and go.

I hope that 88' 4Runner has some nice parts.

did you ever check the valves? its just 4 nuts to pull the cover. who knows maybe its as easy as they all need to be set

I'll have a look, I figured I'd have to get a timing chain anyway.

Any recommendations for spare parts or upgrades to get from the wrecker?
