89 4runner just won't give up.

I've kind of been waiting for my 4runner to die or have some sort of huge issue that would justify selling it and getting the Tundra I want. Well the damn thing just refused to cooperate this spring/summer and I can't really just up and get rid of it. As of right now I have exactly 4 things that need to be addressed before it gets too cold to work on it.

1) IACV, I'm sick and tired of the high rpm at cold start.
2) Power steering pump is leaking.
3) Busted CV boot on the passengers side.
4) The AC doesn't work.

1 and 2 I'm doing in the parking lot as soon as my parts arrive from Rockauto. I talked to the local Toyota guys (who are freaking amazing!!!) about doing the work for me and it was going to be way too expensive for me to stomach right now. Number 3 isn't a huge issue and number 4 I won't need till next year anyway.

It's funny because I'd put a couple thousand into it knowing that it'd probably only last another year or so and it refuses to quit. Hell I did the gears to get it up north and was going to sell it...... then had Toyota replace every seal in the thing from the front of the engine to the back of the tcase just knowing it would just be a band aid for the next few months. Now I'm chasing 260K miles on it (all original other than the updates I've done) and I swear it just keeps getting stronger.

I've looked at probably 3 dozen vehicles to replace it from 80/100/200 series Land Cruisers up to 2008-2012 Tundras and every time I get back in my little 1st gen to drive off the lot she just makes me smile and not want to get rid of her. It's gotten to the point where my fiance is about convinced that even if we do go ahead and get a new "family" vehicle we should keep the 4runner for a, get this, "dependable DD with a hell of a lot of character and off road ability".

I think the only things I would change if I could go back would be smaller tires that are better in snow and ice. But I can always change that as soon as the Treadwrights decide to start wearing out although that doesn't look like it'll happen any time soon.

At 260K miles, it is hardly broken in. Keep it!

Tough call bro.

I did a write up on the IACV if you need help with that.

Do a 3.4L swap. then you'll really never sell it!!!!!! Besides if you ever come visit us, we could probably make that happen

Keep it! You're not going to get as much money as it will be worth to you to keep it around, and your fiancé is on board, so half the battle is already won. (Her points are spot on too)

I just bought an 88 with 245k miles, so for both our sake, I hope it's not going to quit on you any time soon.

If you have the money to pay the car payment and full coverage for that new tundra your $Runner is now your weekend warrior. They won't give you much for trade in so why bother? To have both would be ideal

May I suggest this to go with your whine?

Makes nice sandwiches, though personally, I prefer provolone.
