'89 22RE knocking in top front of engine
'89 Toyota Pickup 22RE 4WD, 200,000+ miles, supposedly rebuilt a little over a year ago (I've had it almost a year).
I drove it to work one night, the next day coming home it lost power, rattled like the engine was going to fall out of it, and by the time I made it home the manifold was bright orange.
Based on info on the net, videos on youtube that sounded just like mine, and advice from a mechanic buddy, I replaced the timing chain. I also found that the distributor cap was corroded, so I replaced the dist. cap and rotor button.
Cranked it back up and it's still making the same sound. It's a hollow knocking sound in the top end near the front of the motor. It almost sounds like it's under the valve cover, but I can't find anything wrong there. I only let it run for a minute and I noticed that the manifold was already getting unusually hot.
I searched and saw where some have had similar problems, but no one has mentioned the manifold getting that hot.
Anybody else had this problem? Suggestions? Help!
Thanks,
Matt

Is it overheating? I would think it would be if the manifold is getting that hot. Im a complete novice when it comes to Toyota but i would say maybe your Catalytic Converter is clogged. Good luck.
