88 v4 4runner vs 89 v6 as daily driver.

Hello, so this is my first post here and I am extremely beginner to working on cars and i'm looking at getting my first 4runner. Both are in pretty good shape. One is an 89 with the v6 engine, manual transmission and a list of aftermarket upgrades. (here's a link http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5238687243.html). On the other hand there is an 88 4runner for sale with v4 engine, auto transmission http://modesto.craigslist.org/cto/5214463385.html.
So i'm wondering to get help from the experienced crowd what you think would be a better choice for a daily driver, reliability and power wise.
Thanks

Are those your only two choices? Both the V6 and the Auto trans have mixed reputations. Given those two, I'd pick the 88.

I'd really try to hold out for a 22r/re with a manual trans. I'm sure others will chime in, the truth is out there!

Not sure if you are still looking but I have a 89 V6 auto trans 4runner. Semi-daily driver in a big city. All good. Love the auto in traffic!

Mine has 190k. Head gasket was replaced about 100k ago. Other than minor water leaks form various little hoses and valve cover gaskets, no issues. I hear talk of bad gas mileage but does that really matter on a vehicle that is part daily but mostly fun? I may post mine for sale soon. Not due to problems, just other hobbies.

Mine has 293,000kms, bought it for $1000. Other than oil changes, coolant flush & new thermostat, and an o2 sensor, this thing has been rock solid. You have to spend money on maintenance for a vehicle this old but that goes without saying. Valve covers are leaking but that's a $20 fix. Gas mileage isn't great but it's not a 4 cyl Honda.
