88 and up, ifs steering box seal replacement!
i have searched and searched and cant find any details on removing the steering input shaft from its housing, (not the steering gear housing). im trying to replace the input shaft seal, and i have the input shaft out of the steering box, but now i need to get the shaft out of its own lil housing. i have a fsm, and it shows everything except what im looking for lol. any ideas before i try to smack it out of there with a hammer?
any help would be great!

lol, my input AND output seals were leaking on mine... I just snagged a box with about 120k on it out of a junk yard, pretty'd it up, and slapped 'er on
cost me about $50, and a little cleaning, then some paint that I had left over

I still have my old box too...
I plan on getting some seals and rebuilding it one day
then I'll either keep it for a spare, or turn around and sell it, considering reman ones go for $200 plus

thanks blknblu! there is some good info in that link!
but the problem is, in that link they rebuild the older style steering box. my input shaft housing is different than that one.
mine is the one on the right. im not sure if the input shaft gets pressed out or what, there are no snap rings on the back side.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I just read through it yesterday and in my case it does apply to me. I couldn't remember without re-reading it what info you could glean from it. My dilemma is similar. I want to upgrade to the newer box as they are beefier but then my steering shaft will need to be altered. It never ends. 
I was hoping between the link and the online '93 manual we could figure it out. Note that in the FSM just about every tool for the damn thing is an SST. Honestly that link has been sitting in my bookmarks for years. I'm just glad it still works.

yea i noted that lol.. half of them were mounts that bolt to the box and then get clamped in a vise. i just put the box itself in the vise and clamped her down lol. sometimes sst's can be over rated, and other times it cant be done with out one. i guess we will see.
yea the fsm doesnt speak of the input shaft seal. im tempted to just try and tap it/ press it out, but there are notches that look like it could use some sort of sst to unscrew it..hmmm..
ill bet that it just presses out, but i dont want to find out the hard way lol. i already found 44 lil ball bearings that fell out of the worm gear the hard way lol.

Yeah do it, the list of people with this problem just grew by one...
I tried the used part route, got it from a guy off here but it leaks too, although slightly less than my original. But now that I have a "spare" I want to try to rebuild...

heh my input leaks as well =) .. I've gotten lazy and just been refilling the resevoir about once every 2 wks. Rainy season is here and I predict I will live with this for some time to come, lol
I even have a spare box HA.. Im just THAT lazy. Yea im that guy
It's interesting.. It started leaking after the adjuster screw ontop mysteriously came lose on a ROUGH wheeling trip and all the fluid spewed out when i was stuck in a 7ft hole in the woods, dont ask haha... Drove it to my buddies shop few minutes away without fluid.. Im sure it got really hot.. now it leaks =/

So does mine, in my '91. I wanna just replace the whole box, but according to the FSM, cuz I have ABS, the book says I'd have to re-bleed my brakes, and need some "special" SST that costs a fortune, and "strongly" suggests taking it in to have it done by Toyota. Been leary of doing it myself.....putting it off for a year now......lol!
