88 knock sensor in a 92

Two owners ago, my truck blew its original 3.0 and got a donor 3.0 out of a 88. Now this engine blew a HG so I'm in the process of tearing into it... BUT the motors got an 88 knock sensor and wire in it, and the other half of the wire that goes to the ECU is still the 92 one. The two connectors are different so they don't connect. Also, I believe the 88 and 92 knock sensors themselves are different. I'm gonna be replacing the knock sensor wire and knock sensor while I'm deep in the engine, does anybody know if I can replace the 88 sensor with a 92 one and use a 92 wire? Or do I have to get another 88 sensor, and then splice a 92 connector on the end of a 88 wire? Should I even bother??

I cannot answer your question as to mixing the two types of sensors/pigtails.

But, I would point out that the damn thing is buried under the intake manifold and is a PITA to get back to. So, given that, if it was me, I would use the correct model year sensor and pigtail to avoid having to take the plenum, fuel rails, and intake back off to fix it if it does not work.

Also, 53 in-lbs is the torque spec for the knock sensor. It took me a trip to the dealer and a conversation with their master tech to get that number, it is not in my '89 FSM. He said that the knock sensor body has a very thin wall just above the threads. If you over torque it you will shear the thin wall and leave the threaded portion in the block.

Good luck,

Mike

Ya, I get it. The motor swap was so half-assed it's not even funny... I'll figure out a way to make it work, though, and post back when it's all said and done.

I have the exact same setup with mine. I put in an 88 motor in my 94. I just left the 88 sensor in the motor and spliced the connector from the 94 sensor onto the knock sensor. Then it hooked right up to the 94's harness.

My engine runs fine. I dont have a CEL and my swap was over 4 months ago. So I don't think the sensors are different with the exception of the connector.

I am sure there will be people that will protest and will say "if your going to do it then do it right." I just did not have the cash on and for a new knock sensor and needed my DD back.

I think many toyotas from 88 to 2000 use the same sensor just diffrent connectors.22re,3vze,5vze,1uz
