88 With code 52, possible wrong ECU being used?

I am a complete newb in telling the differences. So here's a story and I hope you guys can shed a little light:

1988 4x4 gets a swap from a previous owner

Code 52 pops up

But there is no knock sensor on the current motor/ harness

My question: Is it possible to have used the 88 ECU on the potentially older harness, and now the 88 ECU isn't getting any KS signal so it throwing the code?

Thanks
Jake

What engine is in there?

Should be a knock sensor.

The KS is the yellow connector at about 10:00 o-clock position from the oil filter:

So buying the truck may be more hassle than its worth? I don't really know how many ECU's are floating around.
