hey, a week ago i bought a 1987 pickup sr5 22re 4x4, its from the states and has no rust.

if i get in the truck and push clutch in and try to start, it will just crank and crank and crank, then 2nd or 3rd try start, but if i try to crank it without the clutch in 2 or 3 times then push the clutch in and try it fires right up.

Sometimes after startup it will idle from 100-900 bouncing . revving it up to 3 grand a couple times mellows it out.
and at stoplights it will bounce from 500-600 ish sometimes.

previous owner said the fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced. i have replaced.
O2 sensor
fuel filter
spark plugs, wires distributor cap, rotor
i pulled the fuel tank yesterday and checked the fuel pump and fuel strainer, i dont know much about fuel pumps but it looked new as he said and i cleaned the strainer but it wasnt bad anyway.

Once started it runs like a top besides at idle, but lastnight i belive a timeing chain noise or valve train noise started. also a belt was being really loud,

i have put the key to the start position and it has stuck there after key was removed and kept trieing to start, smacked it and it stopped...

that makes me think igniton switch, but i also am thinking fuel pressure, but this is my first toyota and i want some advice before i replace everything trying to fix it. i also dont know alot about fuel injection. but i know my way around a truck/car and work at a shop/towing yard.

any/all help/advice/anything is appriciated!

How would i adjust tps, and afm? I think fuel system could very well be loosing prime. beacuse when i have to turn key with clutch out only thing i can hear is fuel pump getting lines up to pressure. Timing could be off. I will take a video of it running. and startup of the rpm bouncing.

Check in the forums for the TPS adjustment check. But first I'd make sure it's not something as simple as the fuel rail loosing prime. Find the leak & fixing it first would
Be my suggestion.

could u be a little more in depth about how i would check the fuel rail? im not farmilur with efi at all

and i searched the faq and forum for tps and no luck finding how to adjust?
not sure this is relivant but in 5th or 4th gear engine light comes on downshift or let off gas and it goes off.

also the previous owner told me it needs a new idler arm, would that affect it?

did the fuel pump test jumper and it fired right up. but it does on occasian fire right up anyway.

Common, for an intermittent proplem. Test Circuit Opening Relay (COR):

Could be the fuel pump contact is not pulling in hard enough to keep the pump running full blast.

And check the vacuum at the fuel pressure regulator:

That picture shows you the vacuum lines to the fuel pressure regulator. You check for the presence of vacuum at the FPR:

Use a vacuum gauge or you could feel for vacuum with a finger tip on the end of the line. Vacuum will cause the line to stick on your finger like if you put a finger over the end of a straw and suck hard. No vacuum will not do anything on your finger. Reason for vacuum? Fuel pressure, more vacuum = lower fuel pressure = less fuel at idle and low engine loads. Helps ECU decrease fuel to engine at idle so it runs better.

i may sound stupid but i cant figure out how to do any of those 3. i have a volt meter and wire to jump, but i havnt worked on much electrical stuff either, mind explaining a little more in depth? i think i can do the afm test, and i have a idea of where cor is but from there im lost.

okay and for the vaccum testing, with the engine running i take the vaccum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is vaccum? correct

Obviously. Of course there would be no intake vacuum with the engine off and I assume the engine stops just fine so would make no sense to test the off condition.

i was more checking that i pulled the vaccum hose off the pressure reg. i didnt think there would be vaccum with it not running hahah
