87 Runner HID CONVERSION KIT???

I was driving lastnight and a friend asked me if my headlights where burned out. As many of the 1st gen people know, the factory headlights are very dim.

I'm thinking of installing HIDs on my 1987 4Runner. I don't know much about anything mechanical. I found this kit on ebay. Would the headlights fit an 87 4Runner?? Would this kit work??

Any input would be very helpful

Can you see light between the hood and fender? If the reflective chrome stuff flakes off, it kills the reflection inside the light.

I would look at the above post and going with some good quality PIAA or Silverstar bulbs.

HID kits on vehicles that didn't have them from the factory is illegal in some if not most states IIRC.
I know it will get you pulled over here depending on the cop.

I thought of going with HIDs because they are so bright. The headlights on the runner right now are very old, I'm willing to bet the light is not reflecting.

Wheather aftermarket HIDs are legal in Utah is a good question. I should problaly find out considering that I'm going to school to be a cop.

Do you know a good website where PIAA or Silverstar bulbs can be had?

I would still like to go with HIDs......thinking thinking

Can you provide any links or documentation that they are illegal in some states? I have never heard of this and am under the impression that installing aftermarket HIDs is completely legal...

I think the issue is not so much the lights themselves, but the fact that headlights designed for HID lights have a "cutoff" on them which prevents the light from blinding other drivers. If your headlight is not designed with this in mind, it will not have a cutoff that will prevent this blinding, which will likely get you pulled over. Also, headlights which are not designed to house a HID bulb may melt due to the unanticipated heat generated by HID bulbs. It's not as easy as just slapping a HID ballast and bulb in an old casing, but you can do it safely and legally if you do it correctly.

If the chrome has flaked off - Hella conversion housings work really well, as opposed to the sealed beam headlight.

Then put in a set of 80/100 bulbs and light up the night.

Or if you want to be cool, put the hid's in and have another reason for a cop to pull you over.

HID headlights are illegal UNLESS you have them retrofitted. most newer model cars are already pre retrofitted due to the fact that HID's are so popular. That being said, you most likely not be pulled over for running HID's without retrofitting them due to the fact that every other car is running these HID headlights. I found a few kits for HID's but have no clue how good they are. I would like to know as well seeing as how i have an 87 4runner....
