How many miles? Drop the pan, and install a new filter. Add half a quart of lucas to free up the shift valves in the valve body.

Had pretty much the same issue with a 91 4runner I had. Solution was new solenoids. It wasn't the hardest job in the world (and I that's saying alot for a guy like me with no garage). drop the pan, unbolt the solenoids, install new ones, install the pan, fill fluid and drive.

He's talking about kicking down, not shifting up.

Check to see if any codes come up anyhow. My guess is one of the shift valves is sticking, and maybe just a simple fluid change would fix that.
