87 pickup 22r

Having a problem with my truck, runs well at idle and up to 35 miles per hour in 3rd gear, 45 miles per hour in 4th gear and 53 miles per hour on 5th. The engine starts hesitating at around those speeds. Timing good at 0 TDC, carb ok, fuel line good. It appears to hesitate under load. It maybe a coil or ignition problem. I do not want to start just changing parts. If someone has had this same problem let me know.

Thanks
Bill Wilson

53 in fifth?

What gearing/tires are you using.

with a stock setup (im just assuming your rig is running stock gearing/tires) you shouldnt need 5th till about 60-65 miles per hour... cruising. You get to far down in the rpm's and you're going to lug ... which would cause major hesitating heh

I personally usually only shift into 5th (which is an Over-Drive incase you weren't aware) at around 68-70mph which is a good rpm (bouts 3000 for me) for highway cruising. It'll make it up most inclines, anything with a noticeable grade and I'm back in 4th to maintain 68-70.

But if you're using 4th or 5th anywhere below 3000rpm, you're wasting gas and lugging the motor unless you're on flat level ground and just maintaining a cruise.

I have a 22R as well, im running stock 4.10 gears and 31's. I don't even consider 4th until around 53mph actually (coincidence). 3rd will take me up up to around 65mph if I need to (ie get up and go, onramp etc). That'll push the rpms up to around 4500 tops. Which is about the top of the powerband for our motors.

Unknown on RPMs no Tach, Vehicle will not go over 53-55 in 5th gear
Tires are 31's X10.50, gearing is stock?
Delaware is flat as you can get.

Thanks, Bill

Trying to figure out if it's your driving technique (or underdriving) or the motor.

Don't shift out of 3rd till you hit 50mph. See how it feels. The motor gets loud, but you're only in the 3500 rpm range there.

I'm just guessing you're shifting way to early. Like I said 5th is worthless below 65 miles per hour. It's an overdrive, it's meant for maintaining a highway speed, not accelerating with.

** when i first got my yoter, 4+ years ago, long before I did the sr5 guage swap.. and the other yotas we've had never had tachs so it's been by ear from day one. You quickly learn that, there is so much more headroom in your accelerating it's surprising. I used to never take 4th past 60, lol... and never 3rd past 45. By ear and the exhaust i had at the time, it sounded like the motor wanted to disintergrate. Truth is, thats undershifting by a lot and you're not even using the power the motor is designed to make by shifting so soon.

ok, so its not you

Is your vac advance working, you said you set timing to 0. Which is correct, but if your vac advance isn't working then at the higher rpms it's not timing properly.

Pull the two vac hoses that connect to the vac advance diaphram on the distributor.. I forget which hose now, but if you suck on one you should get resistance, if you suck on both and you can blow or breath in air freely then its shot and you'll need a new one. (junkyard, they cost rediculous money new)

might be a cause of your problem possibly.

Or could be your carb is flooding (rich) from a stuck float or your carb may just need to be run through .. rebuilt or just cleaned.

might check compression to rule that out.

Could be a lot of things really. Could even be a fuel delivery issue. Might replace your fuel filter (might as well they're cheap). Or maybe your fuel pump is shot. I've had to replace both pumps on both our yotas. =/

Drew303,

Thanks, I still think it's a coil or ignition problem. Already did the carb, fuel line, replaced fuel pump, checked the vac lines and distributor. Not much left.

It might be a VAC leak? Might try spraying some starter fluid around the base of the carb or the intake near where it connects with the head. If engine revs up, you've got a leak.

Probably..... not the case since you say it idles fine.. but never hurts to rule it out =)

You may want to check your cap and rotor my 82 had almost the same problem where I was on the highway and it started to bog (never happened before) and the all of the sudden the motors died, Took it home and started looking and was getting fuel, air and spark. Really confused, I took the distributor cap off and the flat spot on the rotor broke and made the timing go out of wack. So what I would do is, one check for excessive play in the gear shaft and try to hold the gear still and try and move the rotor back and forth. if you have any play in the rotor GET A NEW ONE, get the cap as well. Hope this helps. Let us know.

heh, speaking of rotor and cap.

I got water in the distributor during some night wheeling. I've given up on sealing the f***er over the years so i just get used to moisture getting in and causing me a delay.

anyway, the contact that pushes down on the top of the rotor it'self (little nipple with a spring behind it) ... well, in the gloom of hte night and with only the light of a small Maglight I somehow knocked that little top contact out spring n all... not sure how.

Anyway, got it all back together, it wasn't till the next day that I noticed that piece missing... infact i dont even remember why I pulled the cap off the next day but... I did and I honestly don't even know how the motor ran, or even made it home. But it never skipped a beat.

That cap was so fried inside it was hilarious. without that contact, theres quite the gap that was arcing. it melted everything. So needless to say i got a new cap/rotor that day, hehe

Well the fuel filter was the problem, I changed it about 4 months ago. May have had some things in the tank. Running fine now.

Thanks to all.
PlugItIn hit it right on the head.

HOWZIT!?? haha i seen "'87 22r" and my pants got wet!! haha nah just kiddin.
but yah i got same truck... stock but i think the owner b4 me rebuilt the motor.. 22r's arent the strongest engine as you can tell BUT they are one of the most reliable... and for a truck that is 22 years old, i wouldnt expect much on the freeway. i have no tach... but i have the ear... if i over rev, truck starts screaming...

1st- 1-13 mph
2nd- 13-20
3rd- 20-33
4th- 33-45/50
5th- 50-60

65 70 on the way to work tonight, have not got it over 70, after changing the fuel filter

truck was in a barn for 10 years, had 148,000 miles on it. Got it last september. Blown head gasket.
Timing chain also replaced. But about 10,000 miles on it. Great truck.
