'87 4Runner Spark knock - 22re
I recently bought this and freshened the engine up...basic rebuild. the engine is smooth but something is going on with my engine timing. When I use the jumper, the timing does drop to base timing, problem is when I rev the engine the timing jumps up as if the ecu is advancing it. If I pull the jumper, the timing does basically the same thing but of course is advanced even more.
So, is this a problem with my timing chain tensioner, or could it be a bad distributor (was reading some posts on here) or something with the TPS not being adjusted correctly? Anything else to check?
I have to put the timing a few degrees retarded to not get any chatter but of course there is a huge reduction in power.
I have richened the mass air meter up two notches thinking it was a lean condition, no change. 93 octane doesn't make too much of a difference and I have changed the fuel filter on the side of the block. Valves were also adjusted hot and plugs look clean.
Sometimes the idle will hang but if I blip the throttle it will drop to where it is supposed to be.
The only thing I can think of is if the timing is acting correctly that the increased cylinder pressure difference between the retarded and advanced timing settings is causing wrist pin knock or the like but it doesn't sound like wrist pin or rod knock and I checked both of the clearances when I rebuilt it.
Sorry for the long post and run-ons, thanks in advance for any input.
