87 4runner possible head gasket leak
I just bought a 87 4runner that had a leak in the intake manifold gasket, coolant was leaking out of the manifold, and after taking off the manifold I decided to check to see if the oil had water in it... it did , the oil looked like chocolate milk, so now I'm wondering if the manifold leak could cause water to get into the oil. The leak was significant enough to allow the manifold to fill with water.

Check and see if your timeing chain has ate thru the cover into the water pump. This is where most of the time the water in the oil comes from. You will need a new chain and cover to fix it.

can I check that by taking off the valve cover, and looking at it with a flashlight? Also I got the truck started before I took the intake off and I didn't hear any timing chain noise.

as far as I can tell the guide isn't broken I don't see any obvious wear or gouges in the guide, although it's a little hard to try to look down the length of the inside of the guide, and I don't know exactly what I should be looking for. Anyone have any picture of one that ate through the cover?

Not to steal your thunder, but a freind of mine just bought an 86 4runner with a bad head gasket. He bought the kit and everything but still needs the studs. Any online stores he could order them from that you all trust? Aslo what are they to be torqed to after instal?
I understand their are some hidden bolts in their as well that you may want to look out for when doing yours. Like one under a puddle of oil and one in the back somewhere.

Here some pics of covers that I've done in the last couple of months. If it is not the cover and it is the head gasket, be sure to have the head machined. Also I wouldn't take the time to change the head gasket without doing the timeing chain too! Save's time and money later!
20twinz - The head torque is between 53 and 63 ft pounds on most 22RE's. There's no hidden bolt in the back of the head, only under the puddle of oil in the front underneath the timing chain sprocket bolt.

What about buying new head bolts? Like a kit of some sort. Will he need to go to a dealer or do you have a place on line to order them from that is trusted. Thanks for the trq. rating as well.

From what I've heard engnbldr on ebay and http://www.engnbldr.com/ has very good parts and cheap prices for the bolts and gaskets.

Giggity58 is right, E-bay is a great place to shop for these parts, just be careful about where and who you get them from. Go with someone with a high rateing and ask them where there parts are comeing from? I have found that the China made, is the better of the cheap stuff. Go Figure! Anyway most all of it will do the job. I have built many toy motors and they all have been holding up just fine no matter what stuff people bring to me to put them together with.
20twinz, Man if your bolts are in good shape, I would clean them up and reuse them. As long as there not deteriorated along the bottom of the bolt by the thred they should work fine for reuse. There are only two or three that are near the exhaust side that seem to get thin at the bottom, so check them first before you replace them,unless you just want to.

after looking at Broomie's pics, my timing chain guide definitely still has not worn through. I doubt the water got in through the intake but i'm not really sure how much higher the valves are above the lower intake manifold, and I don't know if the truck was driven with water leaking into the manifold, and not out of it. I can't do a leak down check right now because my air compressor is broken, is there any other way to tell if it's the head gasket?
