87 4Runner Emission Troubles

I went to smog my 87 4Runner and failed with high HCs. I gave 'er a tune up with new Bosch plugs and wires, and new cap and rotor. I also bought a bottle of "guaranteed to pass" additive and put it in the tank. I retested and now my HCs are the same, my CO is through the roof, and my idle (previously fine) is at 1230 to 1290 (I didn't touch it). I replaced the O2 sensor 2 years ago. I've been getting 20 mpg for months and the truck has been running great. The guy at the city retest center seemed to know a lot about Toyotas and said that Toyota recommends against over the counter injector cleaners, and that use of other than NGK plugs can throw things off. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, and I used the jumper for the diagnostic and it points to the O2 sensor/sensor circuit and to the throttle position sensor/ sensor circuit.

The first thing i would recomend is replacing the spark plugs with stock NGK plugs and throwing away those Bosch plugs, they just don`t perform well in our engines. Replace the TPS if its the original, and test or replace the 02 sensor. Run out the tank of gas that has the guaranteed to pass in it and fill it up with good quality 92 octane and also check the timming and make sure its set right, what about the cat, is it the original one ?, it might need to be replaced also.

Howdy krak, lemme tell u a secret, the best/easy way to go is one of those (paisano) free pre-test places, once they spend some time doing your truck, they wont let u go 2 easy, and the best part is, they put the total price at front, so that way u know if it's go or no go. salud paisa.

Yea first off NGK's are required. If its not been tampered with the idle is high from some engine malfunction. TPS? Vaccum leak may be possible check your emssions hoses real good. Set timing. If the O2 sensor you know has never been replaced you might wanna try that. Your caddy might be an issue but if it does not smell like rotten eggs out ur exhuast its fine.

Well, a high carbon monoxide reading generally means you're running rich. If it's through the roof, then you're running pig rich. If this was previously fine but went up after you added your 'make me pass' liquid, then ignore the high CO readings. Burn all that siht outta your tank and it should go back to normal there.

A high HC reading means that raw fuel is being read at the tail pipe. I wouldn't worry about 'replacing' the TPS sensor. These sensors are not a variable resistance type switch. (essentially)the only thing they see is either IDL or WOT. Either it works or it doesn't. Make sure it's adjusted right, but other than that I wouldn't worry about it. The high HC reading is usually caused by poor combustion, which is usually due to poor ignition. MAke sure you have the right plugs, gapped correctly (don't trust what they come out of the box at... gap 'em yourself). Make sure your wires are good (only use TOYOTA wires... yota's do NOT like aftermarket plug wires... at all). General rule of thumb is less than 10k ohms per foot of wire. Make sure you have a good solid spark. The more fuel that you ignite, the lower your HC readings will be.

Good luck!

ok um..... your truck is carb with an o2 sensor.... this means someone did an EFI to Carb conversion on it and thus your truck sadly will never be right again......

Dude, you have no idea what your talking about, carbed 22Re`s do have an 02 sensor, but it works a little diferent from an EFI set up. There is a small computer box behind the passenger kick panel that runs the emissions electronics and sensors on a carbed truck. I had an 84 22RE that was carbed and also had some type of a temperature sensor that went into the cat and it was all stock. So an 02 sensor on a carbed truck is normal, and if the cat has been punched out, then you need to replace it or you will never pass a smog test.
