87 4runner died

87 22re 5 speed 4runner was running fine I had been mudding the truck and the alternator quit working a few days later. rinsing off the alternator and it came back alive then about 5 minutes later engine just shut off won't fire back up. Will start with with fuel so it's a fuel issue. Pump is kicking on can hear it also I have two or three dead rigs so I have lots of parts. Just need to know what sensors or relays to start hitting. All fuses good and fuel in the rail. I have been reading other posts about dizzys and relays and stuff but this is my first efi toyota. thanks

One more clue if anyone can help. When I'm cranking it over initially it spins then acts like timing is off and drags then goes good again. I went out first thing this morning and it cranked over and fired for about 3 seconds ran great then nothing. Has what appears to be good pressure in rail squirts out hard.

I've been trying replacing various parts from good trucks replaced the whole coil pack assembly with the three plugs, the finned little box on the passenger fender and the relay deal next to it. No change. Here is what I did find whenever the battery is disconnected and reconnected it will fire for a second then shut off. But it acts like whatever controls timing is not working properly since it is dragging from time to time. Also I checked the ground behind the power steering pump. Getting a code 6 no rpm signal? help

Figured it out myself finally traced a few broken wires that were barely touching water made them short off the round plug that came off the coil.

Figuring it out yourself is always easier than trying to get help from this place on a Saturday night.

Darn. I was reading it and about to tell you to look for broken or loose wires and you already found it.

Ya I was supposed to go wheeling so since I couldn't take my rig I took the hood off in the morning and let the new mexico sun dry it all day and after I got back with my friends handy I cranked it over and it fired but ran rough and they started jiggling wires till they found the right bunch. Found where the previous owner had messed them up and their idea of fixing was twisting them together and taping them. Guess the water just finished it off. But it's fixed right now. The sad thing is I had just registered it Friday put the lockers in the week before and it was supposed to be the shake down run. But it will be next sunday instead.
