87 4Runner brake lights and skid plate

I looked around but couldn't find exactly what I need.

I recently did a bunch of work on my 87 22re. New rebuilt engine, new clutch, installed electrical radiator fan, fuel injectors, flushed radiator and heater core, new exhaust line soon, etc.

Runs awesome now. But my brake lights will turn on 9 out of 10 times that I shut the door; and more importantly, they'll turn on while driving. I've followed the wiring from the pedal to the switch itself, but I don't see any problems. I might have crossed something when removing/installing the heater core. Any ideas where to look?

Secondly, I went to re-install the front skid plate and it seems that either I'm looking to the wrong holes or that the right ones have frozen or broken off bolts in them that I can't remove. Anybody have this problem or know what my n00b mistake might be?

Thanks in advance!

As far as the brake lights go be sure that little pressure switch isn't too close to the pedal, it the switch that turns the lights on when the pedal moves a certain distance.

With regards to the skid plate I can't really reply with out a picture to see what you mean. If there are bolts busted off in the holes you can always drill em and tap the threads.

Thanks Junkers. I'll check on that switch and see if I can't get a picture of those holes. The confusing part about them is that I took the plate off myself a few months ago, ya know? It's pretty bizarre.

Make sure the brake light switch is adjusted right, and there should also be a spring that`s attached to the brake peddle were the brake booster is attached, it helps pull the brake peddle back up.

So here's the skid plate and the 4 holes.

There's also 2 hangers there, but they don't reach the skid plate. Just making sure I'm not overlooking anything.

I know what you mean about that skid plate; i was confused my self when i saw those extra brackets. I don't know what they're for but the skid actually bolts to the bottom of the crossmember and NOT the brackets. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I guess I'm just gonna have to get down and dirty if I want that skid plate back on.

Now if I can figure out those brake lights...

I still think it's that switch on the brakes.
