87' 4R rear key lock/window switch stuck

OK so I've searched 4x4 Wire.com and YT, and at this point, I'm ready to newbify myself a little more.

My rear key switch/lock/window crank thingy will not move when the key is turned.

Is it likely the key switch itself is shot, or is it possible that an internal problem in the tailgate is preventing the lock from moving?

I do know that when I crawled in back I cannot move the actual lock up/down.

This is all part of troubleshooting my rear window problem.

Thanks fellers.

You won't be able to move the lock from inside with the window up. So, that's normal.

Does the window operate using the in cab switch while the key will not work?

The key switch going out could be the switch or the specific relay on the relay board could going out. Or it could be the wiring inside. Maybe the connector to it is rusted or unplugged. You'll have to pull the window assembly out to get to the connector, but IIRC you should be able to atleast see it to check if it's uplugged. I know on mind the window used to catch the plug going up or down because the plastic mount for it had come out.

Some things to check!

Check out 4cralwer.com and his rear window page. All sorts of help there on your predicament.

That makes sense (lock not moving up/down).

Window does not work at all, and really I didn't want to be that guy that brings up the question of "why doesn't my window work?"

I've already been him.

But, no, it's not working, the switch works, and the motor works, but now I'm convinced it's the realy or the rear wiper position sensor. So I was wondering why the lock wouldn't turn. I do know that the linkage inside the door has issues. One side latches/disengages, the other doesn't.

Time to take the back cover off the tailgate and start investigating and troubleshooting.

Edit: Okay....I get it. The key cylinder for the tailgate turns, but won't operate the window.

Well, given what you've said about the linkage, if that isn't engaging or disenganging properly, neither the key switch or the in cab switch will operate the window. I'd solve the linkage problem first and see where that gets you.

Also, if it would make life easier for you, you can bypass the factory electrical relays and switches with a simple toggle and some wire just to get the window down so you can drop the tailgate. Then, once the gate is down, use the switch to move the window half way up/out so you can remove the glass and the regulator assembly.....thereby allowing you to operate on the window outside the cab.

window lock switch, centre console, make certain it is 'off'. if the cylinder wont turn, it is seized. if it turns but the window wont open/close, check for short/broken connections and repair as necessary.
