87 22RE Won't Rev Past 2000

Was leaving O'Reilly's, and upon taking off, the engine completely poops itself at 2000 rpm. Runs fine up until then, but then VIOLENTLY stops pulling (feels like popping out of gear).

Playing with it in the driveway, it'll rev on up if you hold the throttle for a while, but there just seems to be a certain point where it tries to die. Let off and it returns to idle.

Could it be the TPS? Just put a new one on. Seems to be missing somewhat at idle too. Been running fine, but maybe the TPS isn't adjusted properly?

Wish this thing had the 3.0...

intake ducting nice and tight / no leaks? (includes piping to the pair valve under the manifold)
does the CEL come on when it starts to cut out?
and yeah, the TPS could affect it.

^ haha, we've had 3 yotes with the 3.0 in them, with nary a problem...

no air leaks that i can tell (have sprayed TB cleaner around vacuum lines, etc)

just took it for another drive. doesn't hesitate or bog anymore i didn't do anything to fix it. however, holding it at WOT does nothing. doesn't make it accelrate any faster, and it WILL NOT rev past 4000 now. this is making me think TPS, but i still don't know why the cutting out all of a sudden went away...

If it was the tps and you unplugged it, the computer wouldnt take any input from it so it would rev up in your case...

I'm a big help huh?

Anyway, my "used" to bounce off 4k rpm. I kept hitting that spot and I was soon hitting the rev limiter. lol. Anyway, I had bad compression in a cylinder. Maybe it is the TPS, test it!

Angry 1990 3.0 not reving past 2000 rpm & rough idle

Hi I'm new to this website
I have a similar problem on my 1990 Toyota pickup, I did a blown head gasket fix with performance head gaskets & after puting it all back together, I go to start it & started with a really rough idle & won't rev past 2000 rpm. There's times when I turn it on it will let me rev normal past 2000 rpm with plenty of power but still rough idle at low rpm . when it reaches its temperature point it would act up again & won't let me go over 2000 rpm with still really rough idle at low rpm

I had just changed spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap & rotor, throttle position sensor, timing belt, also cleaned throttle body, checked for bad vacuum hoses, also replaced all intake & exhaust gaskets

suspected parts that I think that could be the problem are ignition control module, air mass sensor unit, witch I tested & gave me a reading of 275 ohms & the manual said it needed to be in between 200-600 ohms so that might be good, also thinking it could be an 02 sensor or ecu. I'm just guessing here. So any help would really be appreciated thanks guys

Talking

Hey guy I fixed the problem on my 90 Toyota pickup 3.0 so I thought I post it up to helps others with same problem.

1) Ok so what wasn't letting my engine rev past 2000 rpms was my tps witch I had just replaces about 8 months ago, guess it just went bad, good thing it had one year warranty so just replaced it & is now letting the engine rev up normal

2) than what was making my engine run really rough at low rpm, was a rong vacuum hose That I had hooked up to the top of the egr valve after assembling everything back together on rebuilt heads, yeah so that was creating vacuum at all times, when it should only have vacuum at a certain higher rpm

Hope this can be helpful to other Toyota owners. thanks & good luck!
