87 - 22r fuel pump spacer
All,
My friend and I are troubleshooting his 87 22r with carb. The truck is having a hard time starting.
We put the fuel pump on without the spacer.
Is this spacer needed? Will not having it effect the pumps output?
what about starting?
Please let me know.
Thanks,

I replaced the fuel pump on my 84 22r fifteen years ago with an aftermarket model from napa with no spacer. I didn't have any problems for fifteen years until a couple months ago when the diaphragm went out. I replaced the pump and it went out within an hour, the piece that connects the arm to the plunger broke. So I replaced the pump again with one from a different parts house and it lasted approximately a month and a half. Once I got it off I found that it had broken in the same place as the previous one. After doing some research I have found that there is supposed to be a quarter inch spacer in between the pump body and cylinder head! In summary I would highly recommend anyone replacing their fuel pump to either use extra gaskets or an spacer so they don't keep busting fuel pumps. You might be able to get by without using the spacer with some pumps but it will bust others immediately.
