I'm buying an 1986 toyota 4x4 with the carbureted 22r that was completely rebuilt 300 miles ago and a 5 speed, I'm replacing the clutch and putting new tires on it. It's not lifted or anything. I was wondering how they are on long distance trips. I'd be driving it to ohio from Florida in a few months which is 950 miles. How would the gas be an all that. Thanks

probably like 20mpg, depending on how fast you went. I don't cruise my 82 faster than 70(ish), that's plenty quick for that truck. If I cruise at 65(ish) i get about 24mpg and it goes down drastically after that. these aren't the most aerodynamic trucks... lol

I would check to make sure that everything is safe and working well before going on a long trip. If everything is good to go, then go for it!

300 miles is kind of of green to take on a long road trip. I'd put a couple thousand on it before i strayed to far from home

Yeah, 2nd that! I drove a 22r pickup from Michigan to Alaska some time back, and by the time I got there I had taken off the CB antenna and roof rack in the name of fuel economy. Just take it easy on the skinny pedal and you'll be fine, assuming there is nothing else wrong with the truck. Highway miles are easy miles if you don't push it too hard.

Give your self much more time then you figure on.

Going the end of August in the heat of the summer no Ac more then likely drive at night sleep in the day.

It is a long ride when your not used to it.

Last weekend. I Drove from WINNIPEG MB to REGINA SASK. That's 6 hours. I bought an MR2, Had lunch and drove home. another 6 hours. My truck has 240k. It drove Beautifully! You should have no problem. Bring Coolant oil and gear fluid in case (the breathers on the diffs get rusty, and they seal themselves creating pressure on a long ass drive and will cause your pinion seal to leak.. A 14 wrench you can easy crack it off and hear the pressure of air be released.. I cleaned up my breathers but check them from time to time!)

Edit : Toss premium in and you can go 130 easy (22re) haha although its 1.49L here in Canada.....

Just do it! 950 miles is nothing. I just got back from an 850 mile weekend trip to western Colorado and back and didn't give it a 2nd thought. Just keep an eye on fluids and the gauges, get some favorite CD's, and enjoy the road trip.

Good advice above, for fuel economy, to keep the speeds down a bit. I got 21 mpg on my trip averaging 65 mph on I70 through the mountains. At 75, that would likely have dropped to 18mpg or lower.

And besides, it's not like you're going to die if you do break down on that route. You're not traveling through outback Australia or anything. Help is likely a cell phone call and 15 minutes away almost anywhere.

I was not so much worried about the vehicle but the driver.

If one is not used to driving a few hours to get to a Walmart it can get quite long.

Then the comfort level of a 86 is what it is.

I drove 2,400 miles in 10 days on my vacation trip to baja no problems, i averaged about 16 mpg the whole time, but it was very heavy hauling all kinds of gear, tools, water and fluids for the truck.
