86 tranny swap-seal questions

I'm fixin' to swap out the 5sp W56 tranny in my son's 86 4runner (356,ooo miles!) and wonder where to find gaskets for the transfer case adaptor, front seal hsg etc.

Also any helpful advice for the swap or changing the transfer case?

When we installed the new engine, we changed the front tranny seal but had to use "The Right Stuff", a black cheeze whiz type of sealant from NAPA in lieu of a gasket for the seal hsg. I'm amazed that the parts stores will sell the seal but have no clue about the seal hsg gasket!!

I just did mine with black gasket maker stuff. I cleaned it very well and then put the stuff on. I left the trans empty until I was just about to put it in (1 day later). I did this to let it dry along with the transfer case to trans goop I used as well. I have been driving it for a month now and everything looks good.

All I can add is that if there was a physical gasket, and not just FIPG (Form In Place Gasket), that gasket may be included in various clearance / pre-load / distance-based measurements. Omitting a physical gasket and relying on chemical sealants may affect mechanical clearances. Maybe the physical gasket was .1 mm thick, but anything depending on that gasket will be moved .1 mm if that gasket isn't there. May not be much, and may not affect most things, but it's still something to contemplate.

Imagine what would happen to compression ratio / cylinder head measurements if someone came out with a "Form In Place Cylinder Head Gasket" which is only as thick as necessary to seal the head....

Thanks, I certainly understand the necessity for proper clearances in critical areas like head gaskets, oil pumps, etc. but these are simply seal housings with no real concern for these kinds of tolerances, just leak avoidance.

The FSM says to use "seal packing, Three Bond 1281 or equivalent" whatever that is. I think that is FIPG type stuff?
