86 runner head gasket replacement. Easiest way?

I've pulled many motors but am not very familiar with the 22re. What is the easiest/quickest way to replace head gasket?

Can I separate the intake manifold from the head in one piece, while still in the truck? Or do I need to disconnect all the wires/vaccume hoses and pull the intake manifold with the head, then separate?

Tell me some tricks that you guys have learned in your years experience! Thanks for any help or advice!

Have a digital camera? Take pictures of your current vacuum hose setup. It will help greatly. I did my head job in 3 weeks, 1 of which I was trying to find hoses and figure out where they went.

Use zip lock bags or some way to organize and label bolts AS YOU REMOVE THEM! Example, remove a bolt from the intake manifold? stick it in a bag labeled "intake manifold".

Also, since your head is off I would do other things that might need to be done while you're down there. Get new valves and guides and seals. The head is off, might as well do them, right? (this might actually be overkill. I did my valves while I was doing the headgasket, but my truck still burns oil. It's a valve guide issue, as I did not replace the guides. I should have and now I'm banging my head for it.)

Thanks for the reply. Motor actually only has 20k. miles on it since rebuild. Hopefully head gasket is all that needs to be replaced.

I am mostly wondering about what you guys do for the intake manifold.

Can i separate it from the head while in the truck so i don't have to take off all the hoses/wires? Do you remove it with the head then separate? Can i even get to the intake manifold bolts with everything in place in the truck?

Basically, what is the fastest/easiest way to deal with intake manifold?

Thanks again for the replies. Much appriciated.

I was able to keep the whole intake in tact, and on the head. I undid the fuel rail from the feed line coming from the filter, but I was able to lift it up enought to get the head off the block, clean the block and head with a razor, gasket it, and slide the head back on with out ever disconnecting anything from the head. You will have to take some of those hoses of just mark them. Just be careful to mark the cam gear with the correct loop on the timing chain. We marked it with a twist tie for quick reference, and keep the chain as taut as possible so it doesnt have a chance of slipping of the crank sprocket.

Get you a 30 pak of Keystone and have a ball! We got the job done in 2 hours start to starting the truck.

ALSO THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - THERE IS A BOLT THAT IS RIGHT UNDER THE DISTRIBUTOR GEAR, it will most likely be under some oil and not visible, it is a 12mm so once you take the distributor gear of the cam (19mm) undo that 12mm bolt that screws into the top of the timing chain. Head bolts are 17mm and take 58 foot pounds to tourque I believe.

Wow 89white that's the fastest I have heard. Usually guys are lucky if they get it done in a weekend. It helps to have everything you are going to need. I hate having to stop during the job and run to town to get tools, parts, etc.

We had 4 people doing the job on person on exhaust side, one on intake side, one going right down the middle, and one sitting in the background drinking my Keystones and smoking cigs. We put the first one on upside down, and it still worked other than smoking like a biotch and draining qts of oil per second, so it was a pretty phenominal task.

Basically we knew exactly what to do and where to go, its easy now, I think we might be able to do it in under an hour and a half if we had to do it again.

Thanks for the replies!

My problem is that I will have to take head to be machined, meaning it has to come out of the truck. Knowing this, what should i do with the intake manifold?

and damn! I think you win the record for fasted HG change!

(note you do not need to pull some of the wires (like the starter)

If you have to take the head in anyway you might as well unbolt the manifold. I left my manifold bolted to the head since I couldn't get the bolts to break loose. Let me tell you lifting a loaded head with the manifold still attached to it is a big job by yourself since it is heavy. Actually here is my thread about it: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...d-pita-100857/

Man reading back through that almost brings a tear to my eye lol. I didn't know what the hell I was doing. If I didn't have my Haynes and YT I would have been so lost. I think now I could do the job without a service manual except for torque specs and setting the timing at the end. In March my dad and I swapped in an engine in way less time than it took me to replace that head gasket.

one more thing to do while the head is off is change the fuel filter.

I undid my wiring harness at the ecu and pulled the fuel lines thereby leaving the intake on

I second that. I don't know why the filter is placed so darn deep into the engine bay. I replaced mine and I dont think I'll replace it again for a while.
