86 auto tranny major leak!

86 Runner 22re with auto tranny is on the road after many repairs. Been driving it for the last week without a problem other than sticking brake calipers. Topped of the tranny fluid with 3/4 quart. Noticed a distinct smell the other night while driving and when I pulled into the driveway, I saw a little smoke rolling from under the hood. Stuck my mag-light under the chasis and saw ATF fluid dripping, almost pouring off the front differential. Got so ticked that it has been until tonight that I haved given it any thought. Can anyone suggest where to start troubleshooting a leaky tranny? Looked like it was coming from where the bellhousing bolts to the engine block.

Sound like the front seal on the tranny blew.

not to difficult but a lot of work you gotta pull the whole tranny out if you have no mechanical skills get a book and start getting yourself some skills that is. When your done you'll be proud to say you did it tired as hell but proud. hahaha hehehe

I assume the torque converter gets removed to expose the seal? Do you need a seal puller or SST to get it out?

Yes, the converter must be removed to replace the seal. Once the transmission is out, unbolt the bellhousing and you can use a large screwdriver to catch the edge of the seal and force it out of the pump. Most likely the tension spring inside the seal has failed. Check the converter input shaft for excess wear in the location of where the seal makes contact. When replacing the converter, it has to pass through TWO steps in the pump to be at the correct depth before reinstall. Best I remember, that is around 1 1/2 inches below the bellhousing flange measured to the mounting flanges. That transmission assembly is very heavy and awkward. Get some help and pack a lunch.

I am 99% positive that the engine block will accept the swap. You will need a different ECU and some wiring changes at minimum.
