Hello YT,

I have an '86 4x4 that is running hot at freeway speed. It cools down at lower rpm, but starts getting hot at 65+. I changed the thermostat and fluid, the fan clutch seems to be operating at idle, radiator has only 20k on it and timing is set at 0 degrees. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Uh, timing should NOT be at 0 degrees.

Is it a 22RE? If so, the timing should be set at 5* with the E1 and T connectors grounded (on later year models), or the test connector ground on the DS inner fender.

0 degrees means you are running extremely retarded on the timing. I bet you have no power, and running really rich.

BTW, if you don't know how to ground the test connector, then set the timing at between 12* and 16* without the connector jumped.

It's a 1986 CA carbureted model 22r. The timing was set according to the emissions sticker under the hood. Timing has been set that way for a couple years with no power loss and no heating up issues until recently.

possible your water pumps impeller is getiing worn down. and not pushing as much fluid as is needed at higher RPM's. had a ford do that once. turned out the impeller had been all but stripped clean on the fins that push the fluid.
