86 4runner Starts with Slow Key Turn?

I recently bought an 86 4runner 22re with a slight but annoying starting issue. First things first, when you turn the key to accessory you can hear the fuel pump running. Second thing, if you turn the key really quick the motor will turn over but it wouldn't start. If you turn the key off just for a second and turn the key really slow, most of the time it will fire right up. If it doesn't start that time, it will smell like its almost flooded and you have to push the accelerator about halfway down and try again. This time it will start but it runs rough for about 3 seconds and then clears right up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. That will cause acc., ignition, and starter wires being powered at the incorrect key positions. For example, ignition being powered in acc. position (fuel pump being on) or starter wire being powered but not ignition, (engine cranking but not firing when in start position).

Wow it must be real quiet where you live.

To check the fuel pump I need to feel the fuel line.

My 4Runner starts the same way it seems for some reason the fuel system loses the pressure and needs to build up again to have enough pressure .

So what I do is wait till the radio turns on then crank the engine it stars right up.

I have enough other things to do then chase this issue down it works for me.

Besides it is waiting for a new floor.

Thanks for the help guys!

I've started with the fuel pump problem and seems as though someone ran a wire from the acc. contact on the switch straight to the fuel pump. I've traced everything back to the EFI relay socket. I benched tested the COR today and it seems to be okay. I get 9.5 volts to STA on the COR plug when the ignition switch is in start which should be enough to fire the relay. I then realized that the B+ terminal for the COR didn't have 12 volts on it when the switch is in ignition. This leads me to the EFI relay that feeds power to the B+ on the COR. This relay had a lot of corrosion on it but when I tested it today on the bench by putting 12v to it, it worked properly. Which leads me to the EFI relay socket. With the switch on I get power to the socket for the relay coil but seems I don't have a good ground. I also don't seem to have 12v from the EFI 15 amp fuse for the contacts on the relay.

Can someone tell me if the ground for the EFI relay coil comes from the ground bundle right behind the drivers side kick panel?
