86 22re oil question

hey guys, i picked up a 86 toyota 4x4 sr5 pickup at the beginning of october. i paid $2500 for it. the guy claimed that the motor had less then 100,000 on a rebuild. i did a full tune up, and did an oil change on it the day after i bought it. it has been running fine and has no oil leaks anywhere, but its ate through 2 and a half quarts of oil since the tune up. i checked the plugs and the 1st and 2nd cylinder have oil on the threads of the spark plug. the electrodes them self didnt have any oil on them.3rd and 4th plugs are perfect. no oil on them. no oil in the coolant. any suggestions on the cause? thanks!

My guess is that you need a compression test on all cylinders. No visible smoke from the muffler?

when im goin down hill, like down a dirt road just barely ideling down in first for an extended period of time i notice some smoke when i get back on it the throttle. it smokes for a few seconds as im gainin speed when i first pull on to the highway, then stops. this is especially noticeable with a load in the bed suck as a load of wood.

I would for sure do the compression test. That'll tell you exactly what you need to know. Believe me, i feel your pain. 267k on my 1985 and it burns about a quart a week. The oil companies love me. Let me tell ya....

Valve guides or seals. Would smoke on start up and burn off. A burned valve would more than likely be a miss.

You had me at smoking on deceleration. Rings.

rings ya think? and the smoking is upon acceleration after its been in first goin down hill for an extended period of time off the throttle just barely idling down. like I said 1st and 2nd cylinders have oil on the threads of the plug but not on the tip. 3rd and 4th do not. and no noticeable smoking on normal driving conditions. deffinately using a bit of oil tho. im thinkin of just buyin a reman 22re and swappin em out. I found one semi local that's 900 bucks with a one year unlimited mile warranty.

havent done a compression test yet as ive been working. been keepin an eye on the oil level tho. its consuming a little bit but nuthing too scary so far. notices my mpg isnt exactly fantastic... especially for just having done a full tune up so im thinkin prob rings? mpg varies. at best ive got 150 miles to half a tank but ive got as low as 100 or so.

A rebuild with less than 100,000 miles.... It's probably worn out. They are not going to last like a factory 22re did. I don't know what they did at the factory but nothing will ever last as long as a stock fresh motor.

what, exactly, is that? you need to know oil consumption vs. mileage, period.

"little bit" is useless info.

color of the smoke matters a lot, which we don't know either... blue for oil, black for gas, white/? for coolant.

you didn't do the compression check... see if the cylinder compression rises when you squirt oil in the cylinders, that'll tell us if it's rings or valve-related.
