86 22r pickup, couple of issues, please help!

OK well I did the carburetor rebuild. It ran rough for a little bit and we took the air filter off and it ran fine. Thought it was the MC valve. Well that was yesterday so today I thought id look at it, I put the air filter back on and the mc valve. Fired up my truck with the first then of the key. It ran perfect. High idled for a couple min then went into a low idle. Is that normal? I thought maybe it was running hot, how hot is the air that comes out of the exhaust supposed to be? My temp gauge was on the C line still so I didn't think anything of it. I checked my oil and it was pretty low and it also smelt like gasoline. That's not right is it? What could make it smell that way?

well depending on how many miles on the engine and you were cranking it over and it was not starting fuel can get past the rings into the oil.

Change the oil and filter keep an eye on it

High idle to low is normal once the temperature of the engine reaches the correct temperature.

You don`t really need to worry about your exhaust temperature just the engine temperature.

Although if your low on coolant it can give a false reading
